Tesla Universal EVSE Connected, but 12V battery drained

I gave up on Telsa and I do not expect Honda will do anything. Sigh.

ditto.

I use a third party NACS to J1772 adapter with the “Universal” Wall charger to charge my Clarity.

I secretly hope that “Universal” Destination chargers get clogged with dead 12v batteries at the hotel deployments. (But not really because I want to use them)

sigh.

If you want anyone to blame for these issues, the last people you would blame would be those universal chargers. They are almost never at fault. Onboard charger modules for whatever reason often dont follow protocol exactly, and oftentimes will have strange glitches and behavior that they shouldn't have. Blame Panasonic and Honda. Universal chargers have to be patched frequently to "work around" the errors in onboard charger modules. My advise is to NEVER use a public charger, ever, unless there is some apocalypse that makes fuel unavailable.

Hey everyone! I think I have good news!! I saw a video about the Chevy Equinox having issues with the Tesla Universal Wall Connector on a State of Charge video by Tom and he mentioned a new comparability mode on the Universal Wall Connector so I thought I would give it a shot. I have been charging for 8 minutes and I have not heard the relay click!

Can someone else please test and share their findings? Thanks

The real issue begins after the charging process is complete. In my case, the Tesla Universal Wall Connector starts clicking continuously and wakes the car every few minutes. This is my understanding of the problem.

It’s been so long I do not recall if it was always happening or only when it was full. I’ll try when it’s full sometime this week.

Confirmed it’s still broken. I charged to 100% and like clockwork, every minute the relay clicks sorry for the false alarm. Back to my Lectron adapter.

Yeah I'm 90% sure its from Tesla's auto restart on power failure feature. I think its seeing a dropped connection to the car and instead of giving up, its retrying automatically... until it kills the car and it can no longer complain

I've given up and just use scheduled charge time on the Tesla now for 2hr in the morning to get the car to full and allow for 30 min warmup, and if the car is fully charged I just trigger the warmup feature from Honda Link as thats easier than unplugging it.

That’s a good way to handle it. I’m still using my Lectron adapter. I hope to replace this car with a full EV in about two years to complement my F150 lightning.

Oh boy, just ran into this thread after a lot of online searching. 2018 clarity owner here. Just got the Universal wall charger installed after my juicebox died. Was waking up to dead battery every other day. Made several trips to dealer, leaving the car overnight, getting the battery replaced. Car is now sitting in the repair shop to figure out the "ghost" that's draining the battery.

I started to suspect the Tesla charger and thanks to this thread, now my suspicions are confirmed!

Thank you. It sucks that this issue has not been fixed since it was reported. I may have gone with a different EVSE if I knew about this issue. Also found out that Tesla is not a "smart charger"; I cannot set different TOUs for weekdays and weekends. That's how the cheapest plan is with my utility company. Honda app doesn't help in this department either.
What good is the "Universal" designation if it cannot help you with simple things like this!

Universal is just a word to make buyers think it’s awesome. Sort of like North American Charging Standard, which it isn’t. Eventually, many people will believe it is true.

I have a TUWC and a 2018 Honda Clarity PHEV. The PW3 had killed 2 12 volt batteries before I found this thread.

I have a question for those who are using the Lectron adapter. When I unplug the cord the PW3 thinks it is still connected to the car. The blue light on the TUWC stays on. If I unplug the adapter, the light goes out.

I am dealing with Tesla Support and they want to have me try a replacement TUWC. I'm trying to tell them that that is a waste of money.

I found the same issue with Lectron adapter. I returned it and purchased adapter from A2Z; I like it very much and the light turns green when you unplug just like the original TUWC handle. Also like the size of A2Z adapter. Check it out.

I too went thru 1 12V battery. Tesla support asked me to send video of this behavior. I did. Never heard back from them. If you do get a replacement TUWC and it works directly with the Clarity without draining the battery, please do post it here and let us know; I will bug them one more time to replace mine too.

Can you tell me which A2Z adapter you bought? Thanks.
