Yeah, definitely don’t install an outlet that exceeds the capacity of the wires and breaker. The only time that’s allowed is a 14-50 on a 40amp circuit and that’s just to handle some odd retrofits.

What was the 20 amp circuit set up for? Does it have a receptacle already?

To answer your question. Yes, if you have a 20 amp breaker on a NEMA 6-20r wall outlet, assuming it has the correct wire gauge, then you can use this Amazing E charger (because it pulls 16 amps, 80% of the breaker), you need an adapter from 14-30 to 6-20. They probably use the same design for 24 amp charging models so they use the 14-30 plug.
 
I was going to go with the 40amp installation but the electrician advised me to go with the simpler route ie: a 20amp breaker connected to a 20amp 240 receptacle. The reasoning was that it is easy and it would be easy to reverse as needed. The other solution would need conduits, breaking through walls, running wire etc. This could have been done without a permit but I'm having other work done in the house and risked an inspector noticing this. The 20 amp solution is easy since I already have the wiring and all he has to do is install the receptacle and disable the other outlets. I was attracted to the amazing e 16 amp evse because it's Clipper Creek electronics. The only problem is that, unlike Chinese evse's it has a nema 14-30 plug and they advised wiring consistent with a 30 amp breaker. My understanding from the comments above is that I can use my 20amp circuit but get the adapter that fits into a 6-20r wall outlet.
 
Yes I see no reason that wouldn't work, but that assumes such an adapter even exists...which frankly will surprise me.

But backup alternative and probably even better...certainly much cheaper than an adapter if it can be found, is to just cut the 14-30 off the cord, and install a 6-20p plug permanently on the cord of the charger. They can be bought for $12 at any big box home improvement store.

Indeed. And if such skills are had by the individual to construct one, it would be twice as easy and at least 3x cheaper to just put the proper plug on the cord instead...by the time you buy the plug, the connector, and the wire to construct it. Why not just buy the plug and be done? I'm just not seeing much point in the adapter.
 
I have a 10-50 plug in my garage that I use with a stick welder. I just bought a Mustart 32A charger that fit into the outlet I had. Seems very well made. It is charging at 6.9+ kw. The 25 foot cable allow me to plug in the charger on the wall on the right side of the car and run it up to ceiling and over to the other side. Looking forward to preconditioning!

The information on Amazon about the MUSTART Level 2 Portable EV Charger says:
  • Please do not leave the charger plugged in all the time. When charging has completed, unplug the charger and store it.
It sounds like you leave your charger plugged in all the time. Is that correct?

My electrician says that he can install the nema 14-30 receptacle for me and I can simply plug the evse into that. Is there any problem with doing it that way? Obviously it will be on a 20amp circuit but since the evse only draws 16 amps there should be no problem? Or am I missing something.

Indeed. Hasn’t been unplugged since install in September.
