I had good cell reception, so I doubt that was the problem. The chargers seemed fine, and it worked immediately when I used my smartwatch as a credit card.

In post production I realized how long the app took when I initiated the first charge in Santa Rosa which went just fine. You can see how I swipe and the app takes a couple seconds before it showed the swipe.

Charged today at a Charge point 50 kW. A Leaf pulled up beside me unsuccessfully after multiple attempts to commence charging with of course "an app on the phone". So I threw on my mask and offered my RFID which initiated the charge successfully much to her delight (she really needed the charge to get to Victoria).
I consider this as paying it forward as I have had issues myself in similar circumstances. :)

You were probably at the airport chargers. I have a chargepoint card that will not activate those ones, but my wife's charge point card will (and they both look the same). I can use the app successfully, but it seems to take a few tries. Something not quite right about that installation, maybe because its free!!
 
I used Electrify Canada twice. The process is 'just like filling up' with gas. The second time, in Kingston ON, 3 out of 4 stations had card reader error.

Their billing system is puzzling. They use "NAYAX CANADA INC. Miscellaneous Administrative and waste disposal services" in New Brunswick. An instant $25 charge from NAYAX appears right after a successful card read/acceptance on your record, but clearing it and replacing it with the actual bill after charging completed takes days to show up. In my situation the card was accepted but the charge failed. Had to go to an other unit, where charging was successful. Now I have two $25 charges 'pending'. Not impressed.
 
A follow up to my earlier note on Electrify Canada. The two $25 holds (for same day same time attempt to charge) on my credit cards disappeared. The first one was for an aborted charge attempt by the system. The second try was successful. To my surprise I was not charged for the charge a received - about $10.
Electrify Canada is cheaper for Kona @27c/kWh as opposed to most other charging networks where the single tier cost is 33c/kWh - like FLO, Petro Canada etc. A dubious benefit for slower charging. :)

not surprised at all by the authorization charges, if I use my Esso Extra to pay at the pump / use their app, it's a $150 auth charge in advance of fueling up

Me neither. But when charging (or filling up) at Petro the actual charge appears very quickly. At Electrify Canada it takes days to clear up the hold and replace it with the actual invoice.

Thanks for that info, I am glad they pulled through for you eventually (on the financial end) especially with the N/C to charge surprise.
My favorite DC (or even A/C to a lesser extent) charge is also the one that is free.:)

Wait what , Lars is that a typo or they really charging by kWh delivered in Ontario? As of yesterday I was still paying nearly a 30% "winter premium" to pay by the minute vs kWh here in Manitoba.
 
Well, I guess I'll be taking a survey of locations up the east coast really soon, so I'll report back.

So ... yeah, two EA rapid charges today, totally gratis. I called in one head that first failed to link up, and then
only delivered 35 kW to a 90-degree battery. Switched to another unit and it was fine, full rate. The East coast
is having another ridiculously warm week, which should ease EV travel.

@Lars is EC charging by the kWh? If so,this would be ahead of being told to do so by Measurement Canada who is doing an analysis of charger costs across Canada.

Agree with the per minute rate is dubious at best given the initial kW is well below the charger maximum for the vehicle attached. IVY, the latest unregulated player involving utilities {On.Hydro&OPG} tied to Greenlots,a member of the Shell Group will install at all the Ontario rest stops.

Petro Canada/ Suncor isn't maintaining their DCFC/HPC very well[Plugshare],and their app.review reveals it fails for both ICE and EV drivers.

Has the EC / EA Kona electric 70kW speed been resolved yet? Or has the 20% battery reduction caused further chaos for charging at the highest speed?

Sorry, it is a typo. The rate is 27c/min for 1-90kWh and 57c/min 1-350kWh. Both are without membership. With membership the rate is 21c/min and 44c/min respectively.

Sorry it was a typo - maybe wishful thinking on my part? Electrify Canada charges by minutes of connection like all others. But gives you a break if your car takes less juice - below 70kWh.

Did you understand my reply? kW and kWh are totally different metrics.

kW is a measure of power. Charging rate is measured in kW.
kWh is a measure of energy. Those are NOT the correct units for measuring charging rate.

If you charge at 50 kW * 1 hour --> 50 kWh of energy was dispensed.
50 kW * 2 hours --> 100 kWh
1 kW * 1 hour --> 1 kWh
1 kW * 1000 hours --> 1000 kWh

Multiply the units and values. The charger displays both values (kW for power and kWh for energy) and uses the right units. You will notice that https://www.electrify-canada.ca/pricing/ also use the right units. 1 to 90 kW and 1 to 350 kW are correct as they refer to charging rate.

As a side note, perhaps continued Electrify Canada discussion should be in its own thread.
