Here are the bottom mounts for the shutters. Both of mine were off and there isn't much to it. It doesn't stay securely in the hole at all.

The hole on the aluminum piece is where the bottom of the bracket goes. The grommet isn't big enough to keep the bracket in place.

This is the bracket in place. Notice how it doesn't site flush and it doesn't stay in place.

I fixed mine by drilling a hole in the bracket and then secured it with a screw.

There should probably be a TSB for this if not a recall. The fix is pretty simple however.

MY new mini "GIMLET" is steaming west on the Olympian Highway cureently at the Azores headed for Baltimore. I will advise my pick up date, probably March 12
 
So - in my excitement to pick up my SE, and the fact that I hadn't really thought about this issue in months, I forgot to check. Sure enough the right side of my grill shutters is totally loose. Will get down there to take a peek soon. Even my unfortunate is that I live 3-1/2 hours from the dealership, so taking it back isn't exactly an easy task.
 
Has anyone determined what is actually happening with these shutters? Are they simply not snapped into place? Is there a screw/bolt missing? Does anyone from MINI quality control follow the forums so they can quickly respond to the appearance of seemingly repetitive quality issues? For over a year now we have been hearing about the loose shutters issue.

These seems like an ideal feedback loop, but no one at MINI/BMW seems to be completing the loop. So why not???

I had mine done a couple weeks ago. Dealer says they think the shutters shake off the support rod during rough handling while being shipped. They remove the front air dam and lifted shutter up over a support rod. They say it is obvious when you see it (there are photos earlier in the thread). A five minutes job, I was in and out of the dealer in 30 minutes, didn't even have time to finish my coffee. They said it spent more time going through the car wash than it was on the lift. :)

So since the closest Mini dealership to me is over 150miles away I'm going to try and take a look at my loose shutters this weekend. Anyone have examples/info on how to access it? Does the whole front bumper have to come off?
 
You can probably get away with just removing the undertray to access the shudders. This is held in with 8mm bolts. However, you probably will need to modify the shudders like I did to securely fasten it and in that case, you'll need to remove the bumper cover.

Here are some good videos on removing the front bumper cover.


In this one, you can also see the SE shudders and for this car, they are not loose. You can see it right around 4:16 in the video.

I was able to re-attach the right side of mine this weekend. I removed the screws holding the bumper lip to the underbody panel and pulled the panel down. Managed to get my hands in there and push the arm up and over the aluminum brace and the little nub snapped back in the hole. Seems sturdy now, but we'll see if it lasts.

Did the same this morning. Mine was also right side loose.
