2021 - 2022 KONA Electric - Check Electric Vehicle System Error

It's not needed now but adding your location and Kona year to your profile makes things easier ongoing as there are some regional differences.

My only thought is that IMO the 12V battery doesn't really charge properly while driving, or after the first 30 min of traction-battery charging. Yet, there are certain situations when the 12V battery can be severely taxed. Prior to the error message, had you been in the car, had doors open for a long period, and/or using climate?

Once the car is left parked, it will charge the 12V for 20 minutes, or sometimes even more if it finds it depleted.
 
Thanks KiwiME - I've added that info now. The heating was on during the duration of a five hour journey - so I guess that could have done it.

Interestingly, I've just connected a 12V battery charger up to it and it tells me the battery is fully charged!

SOC after charging a 12V battery is not an indication of battery health. When a battery is weak/damaged it will quickly "charge up" which is really just a surface charge. You need to test your battery (incl a load test) to properly determine its health. Most battery shops will do that for you for free.
 
Unless I know exactly how a dealer does the test (load test results, etc), I wouldn't trust it. A battery place usually shows you the results as they are performing the test. I actually have my own tester, although in the past have seen them do it. I like to see at least 2 successive tests (each about 30 secs), and how long it holds a high CCA without weakening. A peak high or short term high CCA means nothing.
 
As I understand things, there is no freedom how they do it inside regular Hyundai dealer network. They need to buy officially approved test equipment. Like above listed Midtronics device. And those devices are actually listed in official service manuals.
 
I have the same issue. Drove it for about 600 miles. I had been charging it to about 85% overnight. I tried charging it to 100 % for the first time. Was fine that day. Charged overnight. Stopped after 5 miles. Switched modes and it ran another 30 miles. Wouldn't start after that. Towed to dealership last friday and they still don't know anything.

Is yours a 2022?
 
I have a 2022 less than 2 weeks old which I took on my first long trip. It was around 1000km all told. We arrived at our destination and charged to 100% no problems on level 1. We then drove to a level 3 and charged to 80%. After that we tried and failed at a broken level 3 (insulator check failure, we found out afterwards) at which point the Electric Systems fault appeared. After that we have been unable to charge past 68% on level 2 (it simply stops there every time) and 80% on level 2. I have no idea yet if it will charge to 100% on level 3 but I will be trying it. It has the battery warmer and heat pump options.

The car is in at the dealership as I type this and I got a very confusing explanation. It has been very cold here lately (-35 degrees Celsius) and I was told that the BMS limits the displayed % of charge available in that situation, although it still charges to 100% capacity. I said "What?". It sounds to me like the GOM is being confused with the battery charge % somewhere in the line of communication or am I wrong? The battery should always be chargeable to 100% or else it is broken. My worry is they will give it back to me with the dreaded orange ! triangle and tell me to wait for warmer weather. It's a brand new car. What should I do?

I also have a 2022 Kona EV and have yet to charge it past 90% and have yet to use anything other than my home trickle charger that came with the car. I almost plugged in into a Level 2 today while running errands (EV charging spot was primo location) but elected to bypass and walk a few extra yards. I think if I needed to take a 300 mile plus road trip I would elect to fly or rent a car...

Thanks for the reply. It is difficult to explain but flying is completely impossible in this situation and a rental car will definitely be a consideration in the future. That does not change the fact the car is displaying the error. I should find out more today from Hyundai service and I'll report back.

It seems there are some who bought the car in order to drive it very lightly, as a second vehicle perhaps. It also seems that some of us bought it to drive more like a regular, full time vehicle. Nowhere does Hyundai suggest the vehicle isn't capable of this. Note that I'm not complaining about winter range loss, I knew about that going in. If Hyundai knows we should only be charging to 90% on level 1 they can tell us so and we will negotiate from there. For now, I posted here because my car is showing the error symbol and seems to be having similar issues. I'm hoping we can collectively share some satisfactory answers.

I love how the car drives and operates in these extremely cold temperatures. It's a great car. At the same time if it can't charge to 100% then it is broken in my opinion.

I should add that service has kept the car longer as they are not completely happy with their initial diagnosis. That gives me some hope.

Your car is broken and malfunctioning. I'm not sure why you're doubting what the facts are telling you.

Sorry, I didn't intend to suggest it wasn't broken. I was saying that Hyundai service was suggesting it wasn't broken, just a symptom of cold weather. I was glad when they went back on that and kept the car longer.
 
Oh. We'll don't let them get away with that malarkey. Always remember that by having driven an electric car for more than an hour you have vastly more experience with them than any of your mechanics or dealers. It's a drag but I'm afraid you're going to need to both educate them and, more importantly, insist they do their jobs.
 
An update. My 2022 is now in line for a battery replacement due to a bad cell. The battery has been ordered but hyundai Canada has not supplied an ETA to the dealership yet. Fortunately the vehicle is still driveable with the charging hard limited to 80% and we are making due with that. It's a disappointment to have a major issue like this in the first weeks of owning the vehicle. I am glad they diagnosed the serious problem right away and we didn't get the runaround it sounds like some have. Thanks for this thread.
 
I’m a bit surprised that they’ve released the car to you given that the battery has a recognised fault. It implies an understanding of how the “bad” cell will respond to the minimally restricted use.
Given our experiences with dealers and importers over the years that seems unlikely. Many owners with such an error have had their cars confiscated.
But the fault can’t be too bad otherwise you’d be locked out by the BMS.
Perhaps one day the dealer will be able to open an underside cover and replace a module in a few minutes.

Our 4-month old 2022 Kona Electric stopped running since 1/4/22. A "Check electric vehicle system" alert showed up in the instrument cluster (image attached for reference) after I started the vehicle as usual. I was only able to shift the gear from P to N but not to drive or reverse. I was finally able to arrange and had the vehicle towed to the dealer's service center this morning. Also, the tow truck driver was not able to shift the gear from neutral back to park after he loaded the car up on the flat bed! I will need to wait and see what is wrong with the car!

Not entirely familiar with that screen configuration, but it does show 262 miles range.
Was the SOC (state of charge) @ or near 100% when this occurred?
