Most developed a whistling noise but I also saw reports of clicking. Here in USA, they only sold a handful the past few years so not much is posted about them.

I wonder if Hyundai are going to use the same design on their new line of E-GMP cars starting with the 45. With dual motors this could develop into a whole new can of worms

Unless VESS is wired directly into the battery and motor system, disconnecting it cannot be used by a manufacturer to void an entire car warranty - at least not in the U.S. Unplugging the wire from the VESS generator box has no effect on the overall vehicle other than to eliminate that idiotic noise Hyundai chose.

Two days ago, I went for a test drive with a service tech at my Hyundai dealer regarding the clicking noise. He heard it and acknowledged it's not right. They said they will call me in a couple days once they figure out what they need to do. Got a call today that they will be replacing the traction motor assembly, and they already have the parts in. Looks like they're not even going to mess around with the reduction gear box or drive shaft rotation. Perhaps this is a sign that Hyundai has honed in on the issue and how to resolve it? I will be dropping the car off Monday. I'll keep you guys informed.

I'm jealous, its coming onto 3 months since I reported the noise and the tech acknowledged a problem. The shaft rotation 3 weeks ago made the noise exponentially worse and I have been "enjoying" a 7 month old car that sounds worse than any 15+ year old car I have owned. A week ago I was told a new traction motor is on order but given no ETA, this is turning into a very unpleasant and protracted experience.

I have to say I was shocked that they got the motor so quickly. First time poster here, and my 2020 has started exhibiting the "card in the spokes" noise over the past few weeks. My car was built on Nov 5, 2019 and I'm around 8500 miles.

Sad to hear the issue has carried over into your 2020 model. From the recent reports of USA owners, the consolation prize should be a speedy replacement to the new 701 series motor.
My feeling on this is the fluid should also be checked in the reduction gear assembly (for color and metal flakes etc) to avoid any future problems with the installation of the new motor, Maybe suggest this while you are there.

Just wondering; are there Kona’s (or Niro’s) out there with serious mileage and no noise issues? Will the whole fleet of them eventually fail in this respect??

I can't say definitively, but IMHO, there are probably many more cars out there with this issue, but the owners simply aren't aware of it. I can tell you that my wife never heard the noise, even as I attempted to point it out to her. I also suspect that folks that lease their car probably don't care as much since they will be trading their cars back in after three years. It really becomes Hyundai's call as to whether it makes more economic sense to deal with the issue on a one off basis versus doing a full recall. It's also possible that Hyundai still hasn't settled on the ultimate solution and that those of us with the new motors are the "beta testers" for this potential fix. Too many unknowns when we're not privy to insider information.

My wife never noticed the sound either. I would sometimes shut off the radio and climate so I can hear it better and she would ask what am I doing. I didn't tell her though, what I was listening for, as I didn't want her to lose any confidence in the car. She really likes it. Even when I took it in for all those recalls, reduction gear and traction motor, just explained that it was normal new car fixes and maintenance. They only took a day or two in the shop, so no big deal.

Will someone please reiterate, what is the speed range in which you are hearing this noise? Does it continue at the low speeds just after the VESS stops?

I was hearing “click-click-click” noises when accelerating and decelerating at speeds below 10 MPH. I was hearing a higher pitch muffler type sound when accelerating at speeds greater than 30 MPH.
