RIP F150-Lightning

Yeah, it's a great truck. My son has one. But they were losing big bucks with it, and with EV sales down further, made sense to stop it now.

Yeah, big question now about Ford's EV future. My son bought a Lightning a year ago. Now it's a unicorn. I don't know if that is good or bad for existing owners. It is a great truck, owners love it (from their forum). Will be interesting to see what that does to used truck prices. There should be lot of them coming off lease in 2026.

The Lighting is a great vehicle, but it doesn't really fit the demographic who want to tow things long distances. Ford should have made a smaller EV truck, like a Ranger or Maverick.

Ford's new EREV (EV with range extender gas engine) sounds to me like it's going to be a failure. Vehicles will cost more to make because of the complications of adding a gas engine, and I've read the towing capacity is greatly reduced because of the limitations of the range extender engine. Meanwhile the cost of batteries is on the cusp of significantly dropping, so likely around the time the EREV platform comes to market EVs will start to be cost competitive with ICE.

Yeah, been following the Lightning forum, and lots of upset folks over there. Most really like their Lightning the way it is. Better towing would be nice, but is not no-go for them. They had a poll, and most by far would not buy the range extender version. I personally have my doubts if that one will even make it to production and sales. If you really want to tow, best would be a diesel F350, not an EV.

Will be interesting to see what effect this has on the Silverado EV. It does have high range, but is not cheap. And on a trip would still be more expensive to tow than a diesel truck.

Problem in the US, is that public L3 charging is expensive. Here in Canada, esp in BC, L3 charging is much cheaper, and gas/diesel is more expensive.

Electricity in general is expensive here in the states. Rates just went to up 12.5 cents for generation, and it's about another .10 for delivery/fees/taxes/public benefits/etc that they tack on.
22 cents per kwh

I'm hearing L3 costs more than at home L2.

Meanwhile, gas is down to 2.69 this morning.
it was 2.69 10 years ago too. it should be $5 just to keep inflated-target price. So, electric here is actually half price of 2015 inflation adjusted. electric has continued to climb, keeping pace with inflation more than anything.

I think it is a real shame for Ford to give up on the current Lightning EV. Another course could have been to continue producing it a much lower volume, but higher price and make it profitable. The truck is way ahead of its competitors like Rivian, Cybertruck and Silverado EV when it comes to functionality, comfort, ride, and overall design innovation. Maybe some cheaper batteries could be just around the corner. This is basically the jist of the posts on the Lightning forum. After all, the competitors are all much lower volumes. I have driven and rode with my son in his Lightning many times, incl going to the cabin on that rough road. And it really is a great truck in all respects.

I think the dealers killed it. They marked it up thinking the demand was there and then they priced themselves out. 20k over MSRP is not the way to move vehicles.
Ford needed to control that better.
It's not a gt500 that can demand that.

I bought an ICE truck instead of the f150 lightning for that very reason in late 2021. I paid 40k less than the lightning would have cost me
And I get 25mpg highway with the 6.2l v8. not too shabby.

I wanted the lightning to serve dual purpose as a power bank to run my well in a power outage.

I don't tow anything, I just have 2 kids in car seats and I need the big rear seat. I had a Tacoma before the seirea and I had to move my seat all the way up to drive. As a 6' man, that's just not fun.

I'll go back to a taco / canyon size truck in a few years. The scout with harvester package is looking quite appealing.

Yes, they did that at the beginning, and put a lot of people off. Then Ford over did their production, and inventories piled up and Ford and the dealers had to super discount them to get them off the lot. That's how my son got one last Dec. They also didn't properly market it. Until we did some test rides, incl all the competitors (and yes, the Cybetruck), we didn't realize how great it was either. Ford never really sold/marketed it, and the dealers of course didn't.

Too little too late. I was no longer in the market.
I stopped tracking prices after I got my truck. I was a buyer at 50k range + home connection kit. It was 85k at the dealership.

I waited two years to get my Lightning, I refused to pay any markup. Finally got mine at a reasonable price, have had it for two years and love it.
