Proof that the high beams are inadequate

A new (fairly) new review.

At a little before the 5 minutes mark, he review the headlight performance, doesn't look too bad for me

Thanks for noting that @iluvscuba. His looks way better than mine. I think mine might still be aimed to low despite the dealer aligning them. Will definitively find a flat area and a wall to check alignment again. Thanks

At 1:15 -- where are these shopping centers that will charge it in half an hour?! :p

I actually commented on the video and he indicated he found the charge time is not mentioned anywhere in the user manual and he got the charge time from press release and/or dealer. My understanding is that only the Japanese version has a level 3 DCQC port on the rear passenger side (driver side for Japanese) according to 'Electrified Japan''s youtube review

Wow, he got a lot of things wrong. Like the "paddle shifters."

But he did bring up a good point I didn't think about before at 9:35. You can see into the trunk through that tinted back window. Yuck.

But what's this cargo cover he talked about? I certainly don't have one.

In the "Do you wish you had waited for the 2019 Clarity" thread, someone complained about the hard cargo cover, wishing it was a soft curtain like the Prius. I went out to our Clarity to see if I could figure out where the cargo cover was. I didn't find it.

Love it. :)
Just buy enough till your Clarity looks like Charlton Heston’s Jeep from the Omega Man movie (really showing my age on that reference). And then maybe tow the Bobcubsfan generator behind you.

People are complaining about the headlights of Clarity?
It must be the Clarity is too good that you need to find something minor to complain.

Drive a Jeep Wrangler JK then... the weakest stock headlights I've ever seen.
I could barely see the sides at night when leaving a ski resort parking lot.
Everyone has a JK knows that. And the aftermarket offroad lights do serve their purpose.

To be honest there seems to be some variation in the headlights from the factory. My left bright points above the left dim, but the right bright is at same level as dim but points to center of the car.

My dims are great. As you say though, complaints with car are pretty minor after 18,000 miles.

Oh you mean me? I was referring to the hard piece behind the back seat. There is a window for you to look into the trunk right behind the back seat, so if Honda change that hard piece to a soft curtain and make the whole rear window liftable they can make it a hatchback already

I like hatchbacks, too (as with my 3 Insights and my 2 CRXs). Because the Clarity was originally designed to haul around two large hydrogen tanks, it didn't make sense to provide a hatch--all it would do is give you a better view of the rear hydrogen tank (the small one is hidden under the rear seat). Similarly, the Clarity Electric's battery takes up most of the trunk, so a hatch wouldn't add any greater functionality.

When the rear seats are folded down in our Clarity PHEV, it can be seen that the trunk pass-through isn't as large as it could be. Instead there are parts of the frame that restrict the size of that portal. That hard piece below the trunk-view window, in particular must be there to increase the strength of the body structure. It limits the height of luggage that can be placed deep in the trunk, so there must be a good reason for that frame member to be there.

Because the large battery in the Clarity PHEV is so heavy, I'm guessing the extra reinforcements around the trunk pass-through is necessary to prevent unwanted flexing of the body the battery would otherwise cause. A hatchback would likely require even more reinforcement, which would further restrict the size and functionality of the pass-through and increase the overall weight of the car.

I may be all wet with this speculation, but it's the only explanation I can come up with for the small size of the trunk pass-through.

I think that opening is kind of standard for sedans. They usually just allow to passthru some long objects like Ski/Snowboard.
My only sedan before, a Sentra SER SpecV, has even worse opening because of a big 10" stock subwoofer blocking half of the opening.

Here is a picture of 2017 Accord for reference

Off point: Noticed your HV miles is 937 miles. Did you replaced the 7 gallon gas tank with a bigger tank? Lol. I have 1 month old Clarity and never saw higher than 350ish miles for HV.

While the LEDs have the wavelengths that make reflective signs “pop” and standout out very well, what Viking and I are observing is that the high beams don’t illuminate the road or cars hardly any further out than the low beams.

Presto, i previously posted that dealer had adjusted mine and I agree with you that the focus point doesn’t help any.
Unfortunately, there is only one adjustment for up/down, so the highs can’t be adjusted separately. No one has found a right/left adjustment which would be useful in correctly and safely adjusting the highs up a little and a little away from the approaching cars as is customary.
So I don’t see a solution for this.

If you really want to see how unhelpful the high beams are just park your Clarity side by side with another car at night on a flat area and alternate the high beams between them. I saw a big difference.

If your near Louisville I can compare mine some time. Send me a DM.

I did use mine the other day and thought, wow, those didn't really aim up higher much...although side illumination was better (and I look for deer along the sides when I use brights on the country roads)

I agree the headlights are not strong enough, even the high's are lacking. I have a ridgeline with stronger headlights. For this custom light bar suggestion, where would you install it? I think it would look ridicules on top of the car. What about upgrading the headlights, or adding fog lights. I live in South Florida where it gets pretty dark.

You must have missed the drama with the HV range indicator. A recently purchased Clarity likely has the update to make it read more accurately (it won't let the range estimate go up as you drive around town on EV).
