For TX, I would say that is a good deal.

As for recouping most of the cost in a resale, I wouldn't bank on it because
a) Electric & PHEV vehicles (other than Tesla) drop in value fast. Check out the competitors.
b) Car dealers and used car buyers know about the tax credit and will discount the used price accordingly.

If you are thinking about a resale within 3-4 years, it may be better to lease.

With a 3-4 year old PHEV what should a residual value be from the original sticker ? I was thinking Half at worse case. I just hate the idea of leasing as I never know how long I will keep a vehicle in the end. It may be 2 years or it may be 12.

Bought my base Clarity on July 27th for 29,921 + TTL.. cheapest I found in socal after 2 months of searching.. got the mudguards, wheel locks and cargo tray and 2 free oil changes as part of the deal .

My employee went to the same dealer and same sales manager at the end of last month. The lowest they were willing to go was $30,659.

Honda says around 44-47% residual after 3 years. There will be a lot of competition in 3 years so it might be less.

$33.4k is a great deal in DFW for a Touring model.

Definitely do not lease the Clarity, otherwise you pay roughly $8,500 more for the car than you otherwise should:
  • For a lease, the manufacturer keeps the $7,500 federal tax credit, but most manufacturers apply that to the capitalized cost which lets you get really low monthly lease payments. Honda financing hasn't yet embraced the EV market, and in a lease they are keeping the $7.5k federal tax rebate for themselves instead of rolling it into the capitalized cost of the car. Other dealers (ie. Nissan for the Leaf) reduce the cap cost by the $7.5k, and you can see this in the lease pricing details if you go to the Nissan website and price one of the Leafs. Honda doesn't do this so you are effectively giving up the $7,500.
  • Additionally, in the state of Texas when you lease you pay sales tax on the full price of the vehicle (6.25% x 33,4000 = ~$2,087), as opposed to most other states where you only pay taxes on the portion you are leasing (cap cost - residual = 33,400 - 15,700 = 17,700 x 6.25% = ~$1,106). This means you pay an additional $1,000 in taxes just because you lease in Texas.

I am assuming that because the Clarity is a PHEV instead of a pure EV that the used price in a few years will be more competitive with something like an Accord Hybrid rather than something like a Leaf.
 
Paid $34000 +TTL for touring in Orange County CA back in May (just found this forum).

Hi all: I am shopping for my Clarity base model in SoCal (San Diego / Orange County), and here are the prices I've been quoted recently. Before TTL obviously. Thought it would save you all some time.

I started contacting about 10 dealers in Maryland (MD), Virginia (VA), Pennsylvania (PA) and Delaware (DE) area. In the last three days, the best quote for a Clarity Touring model, I have is from a dealer in Maryland. What do you guys think?
Car Price: $30,310
+ Destination: $895

Total: $31,205

+ Processing Fee: $299
+ Title & Taxes: $2,169.24

Total (on the road): $33,673.24

Does anyone know of November incentives?
 
Make sure to ask about any addendum’s (i.e. wheel locks, paint protection etc) that will be added to the price. I had several dealers try and give me a low price verbally but when I got it in writing they added a couple thousand back in
 
Some of our friends have purchased cars from this dealership before and they all had good experience. Many other dealers are over this price by just a few hundred dollars (all below $500 price difference). I even visited one who quoted me $220 higher, but they didn't had the color as the one that I was interested just got sold. BTW, I now have quotes from dealers who are slighter lower as well.

If that price is for the touring and not base, it is a really great price if you can get it without any dealer add-ons.

I don't think any one on this board has bought a touring for $31205 before TTL and any state rebates so far. :)

Heritage Honda, Westminster -580 Baltimore Blvd Westminster, MD 21157. They were the easiest to deal with, especially with no-nonsense hidden deals.

I usually contact and negotiate with dealers via email. Sometimes, they are willing to go further if you talk to them and offer to pay $500 security deposit via credit card to 'secure' the deal, as they don't want to keep price hopping with their best offer.
