Some of the deals on the car new were better than others. Depended a lot on what state you were in and when you bought. I purchased in Alabama in July of 2018. Not a lot of the cars here and pricing was still pretty high. I got about $2k discount from the dealer and then the $7.5k tax credit. After all said and done after paying sales taxes, I paid a little over $28k for a touring model. Still one of the best automobiles I have ever owned so far (67k miles on it now).

I ordered my Clarity PHEV as soon as Honda announced it and waited a year for delivery of the first one in Michigan at the start of November, 2017. My purchasing strategy didn't give me any leverage and I willingly paid MSRP (minus the $7,500 tax credit) to finally get this great car.

Rather than take my Clarity home as soon as it came off the truck, I asked my dealer to put it in the showroom for a week to see if it would generate any interest in this breaktrhough vehicle. Sadly, my salesman said it was largely ignored--except for the Moonlit Forest Pearl paint that was not available on any other Honda. A Civic buyer wanted to order that color.
 
I bought a second 2018 Clarity base model this week. Our first one (bought new) has been problem-free and a great car. Now that our 2000 Nissan Altima (used by our kids) is ready to retire (200k miles), we opted to replace it with a used Clarity. I found one in outstanding condition (e.g., 45k miles, 48.9 ah, clean Carfax report, well-maintained) for $16k total -- $20k OTD then the $4k tax break.

And thanks again to MrFixit -- your PC-base Electric Powertrain Report generator allowed me to quickly access detailed data for each of the Claritys I inspected, helping reduce the amount of time needed for me to thoroughly inspect each potential car. Thank you!

For PG&E customers considering the purchase of a used EV, last month the utility launched a pre-owned EV rebate program: $4000 for eligible lower-income individuals, and $1000 for everyone else. I applied three weeks ago (i.e., completed a form and provided copies of my purchase contract and vehicle title), and received my $1000 rebate check today. This program was a nice, unexpected surprise!
