Is the Kona EV dead in Canada?

When challenged about the fairness of Freight and delivery charges car companies have always justified it as an average cost. That short deliveries subsidize long deliveries. The auto press is full of stories of people paying full delivery charges when they literally live across the street from the factory. Looks like they might have been fibbing. Imagine! ;)
 
Well, there are different levels of delivery/shipping costs. First, they are added to the cost of goods, which are affected by the cost of transportation, incl fuel, labour, taxes, etc, etc. Then at retail there is another delivery to the customer, and that also varies for the same reasons. In this case the factory is in SK, which has a cost for shipping to Vancouver, and then there is the cost to the individual dealers with probably an avg cost for each region. And finally, the dealers tack on their PDI/Freight. That's just how it is.

I am quite sure that Ford or GM cars cost more here in BC than they do in Ontario, for the same reasons.

To be clear that wasn't a quote from Hyundai, rather just spit ball speculation by the author without any supporting evidence or actual news. I really don't see anything definitive about the Kona EV's future based on this article. Its not clear to me why Hyundai would build another "compromise" EV on ICE platform vehicles when they have clearly made definitive manufacturing commitments to a dedicated EV platform. I think Hyundai will milk the Kona class ICE vehicles and potentially add hybrid vehicles for as long as customers want them but I just don't see a Kona EV unless they just rebrand the Ioniq 3 as such.
 
Sorry - you were pointing out that the article did not mention the Kona EV specifically; I was highlighting the fact that it did. And yes - of course - everything is speculative until Hyundai makes it official.

Fair enough you are absolutely correct. Without any intention to turn this into a this disputatious discourse I guess I was responding to your "Enough said" post that seemed to imply that the article in questions was definitively indicating that Hyundai was clearly going one way or another with the Kona EV.

It does seem clear from the article that in very least the ICE Kona version will exist in an updated form.

Well, as I've said before on this forum, I can get what I paid for my Kona 3 years ago (cash offer from a dealer). BUT I can't get a replacement car until next year. And wife is still dead set against sharing just one vehicle. So I think I am keeping my Kona, at least for now.
 
Granted, I live in California, but the local Hyundai dealership has over 20 Ioniq 5's, though they have mark ups of either $3000 or $5000, depending on the trim level and options. They haven't had any Kona EV's for about 6 months as far as I know. I have a service appointment at that dealership in a few weeks so I'm hoping to get a closer look at an Ioniq 5, though I'm not looking to buy one. I would've figured I'd have seen one on the road by now, but haven't yet.

3.5 inches wider, according to the Hyundai website. 70.9" vs. 74.4".

That's why I stopped considering the Ioniq 5. There's enough room in the garage to get between my Kona and my wife's car, but not with an Ioniq 5.

Which dealership? I would be interested in test driving one, although I'm not in the market. I had assumed they'd all be pre-sold.

It was Capitol Hyundai in San Jose. Unfortunately, I was just there this past Thursday and they had none on the lot. I saw one in a service bay which I assumed was getting either the post-delivery or pre-sale checks since it had no plates.

A good dealership, usually with a big inventory. That's where I bought my buy-back replacement 2021. One of the few dealerships that was participating in the Costco auto program for Konas at the time. I wonder if they're out because they're giving better deals than the others.

Anyway, I remembered that dealer inventory can be searched on the Hyundai website, and it shows a number of dealers with vehicles in stock.
