I added sound insulation to my Kona Electric

two week ago I have done both front wheel arch to reduce the noise. I didn't break any clips :)

Here we go :

last batch.

I didn't have time to took noise measurement. It will not be apple to apple comparison.

I change my tire to winter tire so that why I took the time to remove the plastic.

Front Tire noise is less present, will say 50% less, so it's good for now. Winter tire are more noisy than summer tire but there are better than the nexen ;).

But i think that most of the noise is coming near the fender. When you open the door, far behind, you see some black plastic that is not tight. I don't quite understand because my leaf 2013 was way more less noisy than this. Nissan has put completly seal the fender with a foam seal and I think that's why I find the Hyundai way more noisy.

20201024_161741.jpg and 20201024_160203.jpg are showing the noise blocker that I add and I can be easily done with to other stuff I did.

Last part for today : some trunk space done.

First time using this material, so the setup isn't as good as a professional but i think will overall be good.

On a more serious note, thanks for sharing that with us!

Yeah, will happy to help you out, will cost you beer :)

Just want to inform what modification is the most advantageous to everyone.

Sound car professional will be less impress for my setup, but i'm learning very step of the way.

Sound test this weekend ;)

Thanks for sharing the images. Did you notice this fastener on your wheel well liner? How do you remove it? Twist it using a wrench?

almost done the spare trunk this weekend. less louder but with the snowing coming and temperature dropping, I'll surely not to able to complete it.
It's difficult to install the material without space between them. It's a ok job but not professional.

Now the only sound in the back, is from the wheels arch in the rear and the noise coming from the front and the firewall. Need to do the doors too and maybe the roof.

Hi EVPower,
Do you have a reference link or description for this new material?
Thanks for the sharing!

I switch tires last week because of the good weather :)

Now, my I decide to redo both front wheel arches because I'm tired of the noise road and miss the quietness of my old leaf.

I add sound meter. But didn't vary :
before : 40 min / 72 avg / 80 max
after : 38 min / 72 avg / 81 max

So the result look like nothing is gain. Things to consider :
Old sound meter : 16 inch snow wheels.
New sound meter : stock 17 inch wheels.

So no more added sound, even my larger tire. I did find the some frequency are lost compare to before, so I'm happy.

I insulate more the plastic that let trough wiring cable to the door too. No more cheap feeling.

Next the doors ...

Could you do a brief summary of your sound measurements from when you started the noise reduction to where it is now? And I assume you did them on exactly the same road stretch? I know the biggest sound diff on my Kona is road surface. It really varies with diff types of pavement.

Everything is written in this tread for the sound reduction and what I did. It was on the same road, yes.

Is not a luxury car so this is expected, but I almost managed it to be where I like it to be.

Places left to do :
all the doors
firewall maybe
really really maybe under all the floor with removing all the carpet.

Interesting thread but I wonder if there is a risk of condensation & corrosion in cold weather between the cold side of the insulation and the car body panels (sort of what happens with house insulation if a vapor barrier is not used on the warm side).

This would be only an issue if the insulation traps the condensed moisture(not likely with the solid pressed on sound deadening material) and there is not sufficient air exchange/circulation and warmth to move the moisture along such as driving in the cold and then storing the car in high humidity indoor storage setting for prolonged periods. Most cars will never see conditions like this. Even then the car has corrosion inhibitors that would delay problems for some time.

Needed to install a trailer wiring. So I decide to redo the rear left part correctly with the right material. Remove the home insulation done earlier.

Should be able to finish the right side really soon and compare the sound difference.

I have redone the rear left side. In between, when I remove my home insulation, the noise was very present and not comfortable.

I have redone it using closed foam. Will need to make a test drive.

Started the easiest place to add insulation : the hood. Didn't took a db mesure but didn't hear a difference when driving.

No it's a camera problem, you see that hyundai hasn't paint all the surface when you removing the liner protector.
