Hondacare (extended) Warranty

Wondering if any of you sprung for the factory extended warranty....Given all the technology & electronics (and that it is a first year model), I ended up getting 8yr/100K Hondacare for our PHEV.

Got the best price from College Hills Honda, in case anyone is interested (~$1330). My dealer's pricing for the same plan was more than 2.5x.
 
I did, it seems a good idea with all of the very expensive electronics modules. Usually I do what you did and shop around, but somehow I just bought it the same day for $1,895. That was the highest level (I may well have paid too much).

Our credit union offers a 8yr/150k for $799. I don't plan on having the car that long. By the time I'm ready for the next frontier in 3 or 4 years, I'm hoping Tesla 3 will be widely available with minimal waitlist. Based on current data from Tesla, however, I may need that extended warranty.

Two things to consider, many of the mfgr extended warranties are refundable (in part or whole) if you sell the car early. Also, a number of the extended warranties can be transferred in a private sale (but, not for a dealer trade-in).

Just info FWIW. I kept my 2002 Subaru outback for 13+ years and used the extended warranty several times. Other than that, I've wasted a lot of money on warranties over the years.
 
Just like our 2018 Odyssey, another totally new design vehicle, we bought HondaCare through Saccucci Honda for the full 8 year /120k miles - $1714 with $0 deductible - good at ALL Honda dealers nationwide. That was still HALF the price of third party repair insurance my dealer was offering. WHY? Because I want peace of mind that it will match/exceed my traction battery warranty and I can get prorated portion back if I trade at dealer, or up my value on gift to one of the kids or third party sale. Even more important with the Clarity PHEV - this is a brand new device for Honda.

Frankly, I wouldn't have bought without the extended warranty.
 
Yes, but aren't you going to want a hatchback with rear cross traffic alert and better console and longer EV range and all the other goodies the 2021 models will have on them? Will you really keep it past it's mfg warranty? At least that's what I told myself when I refused the warranty.

Probably, but you can get a prorated portion back if you trade it in; if not, I want more than 36,000 miles protection. Some of us can stand more risk than others, and this is SO new for Honda...
 
The Honda Warranty confused me and still does a little as far as pricing but from what I can tell:
ev and hybrid component warranty is 8 years / 160K Km
car is 3 years 60k Km + drivetrain warranty

What extra is the extended warranty providing?
 
I have never bought an extended warranty till now. Considering that the Clarity is brand new with no reliability record and that it’s so computer driven and oriented, it made sense to me. Also since I found the Honda Care D80 (8yr, 100K Miles, 0 deductible, prorated refund, good at any Honda dealer, transferable) for only $1,304 (my dealer matched Hyannis Honda’s online quote) I got it.
What I get is practically the same bumper to bumper 3 yr 36K mile extended to 8/100,000. Read the fine print though (8 pages!). Also, I believe only the battery capacity is warranted for 8 years not the whole EV/hybrid system. So I get that too.

So I get protection if I keep the car long term and my money back if I trade earlier due to technology leaping ahead of me. An easy decision for me but definitely not worth it at regular dealer pricing of over $2,600! You can go to Hyannis Honda and read the contract and get an online quote to take to your dealer to have him match it. Hope this helps

I did on a previous car. The 4 years of oil changes and roadside assistance were included so I didn't have to spend extra for that.
For a Toyota it was $700 for 4 extra years and I never used it. Year 8 I had to replace a water pump, $400 (ouch). That purchase was a long time ago but I don't think margins have tightened up that much.

I am somewhat interested if the discount is deep enough, it is going to have to be really deep.
For That $4k that an 8 year 200K warranty costs I could replace the engine on my current car and still have pocket change and I do have 4K for a repair if I really need it.

I agree, the Honda warranty docs are not written clearly.

The Honda D80 Extended Warranty, 8yr/100K miles (US), does provide extra coverage.

For example, the 5yr/60K power train warranty only covers the ICE and transmission not the hybrid system and it extends both.

It is only the high voltage battery that is originally warranted for 8/100, not the whole hybrid system. So no gain here. The hybrid system seems to have its warranty details through the Federal Emissions Warranty.

The hybrid system is listed under the Federal Emission Warranty heading and has its own warranty heading but with no time/mileage listed. It says refer to Emissions Warranty Parts List. That doc shows that not all parts of the hybrid system are covered past 3/36. So again you get extended coverage on some hybrid system parts.

And finally almost all the 3/36 warranted items are extended to 8/100. Although you have to slog through 8 pages of fine print for the details.

You also get the road side assistance extended to 8/100 and it covers up to 5 cars of your house hold as long as they are Hondas or Acuras. That’s a nice extra considering we have no spare, jack, or tire iron. It also let my son have roadside assistance on his Acura for free.

So correct me if I’m wrong on reading the warranty docs but for $1,304 US, I got a lot of extra coverage, peace of mind, and a few perks. Oh, and did I mention that it is transferable and I get back unused portion if I sell the car or change my mind.

Why respond to me, telling me I am wrong and point to U.S. warranty?

Motor stuff is 3 years / 60K Km

When it comes to the EV stuff covered for 8 years 160km Canada:

Motor Stator
Motor rotor
DC-DC Converter
Motor Control Module
Battery assembly*
Motor power inverter module
Battery condition monitor module
Voltage Converter Module

Most of the rest is 3 year, 60Km

1) Is the Honda Clarity a lemon? <--don't buy it if the answer is maybe.
2) Does Honda make a ton of money from you buying insurance from them?
3) If things go south for a repair can you afford to pay for it? <--if you cant afford a 5K repair get something more economical so this isn't really a question.
4) Would you rather play good odds and keep the money in your pocket?

According to Consumer Reports 55% of people never use the extended warranty.
The 45% that do include those getting roadside assistance.
Repairs very rarely exceed the cost of the warranty purchased.

Are you saying the Canadian warranty is different from the American warranty? I didn’t know that. My apologies. I was just trying to help.

Even the individual states have widely different warranties. I don't know how you guys manage to stay out of jail more due to varying laws from state to state.
For Canada even milk is different up here.
Think of Canada as being as different as Europe for laws.

So is the Canadian warranty like the California Warranty (+12 states) with the extended battery and emissions coverage or like the regular warranty we get in the other 37 states? We’d all like to have that longer HV battery warranty. Do you get it up in Canada?

I can't answer the question but.

Says on the Honda U.S. website the warranty is.....
High Voltage Battery Capacity Warranty:
Gradual capacity loss of the high voltage battery is expected and not covered under warranty. Greater than normal degradation is covered for 8 years or 100,000 miles, and can be determined by an authorized Honda Clarity Plug-In Hybrid dealer.

There are also hidden warranties that get established later on. Every car manufacturer has them but the dealer won't tell you.

Couldn't tell you I am not into comparing the warranties right now but I thought . Here are a few more items that are part of the ISA. There is indication they are also covered for 8 years/160K KM.

Buying extended warranty is like gambling; do you think you can beat the house?

Actuaries have calculated the expected cost of repairs during the extended warranty period factoring in all the probabilities using stats you don’t have access to. Based on this expected number, the norm is to mark that up 300+% and that is your extended warranty cost.

So the question becomes, do you think you are smarter than the actuary.... by ~300%?

Some win, but 99+% come out as losers in the deal.
