Customize MINI Settings with Bimmercode App

I’m curious whether any of the expert Bimmercode settings allow changing of the torque map for the motor. Granted, I’m coming from a Tesla so I’m a little spoiled by the instant jerk of max acceleration from dead stop. But I can tell the Mini is really babying the motor from and doesn’t give me all the torque for a couple seconds when I floor it from a stop. Once the car is already at speed it is a much snappier response when you stomp on it. This car is so fun to drive but I can tell they’re holding out on us!

When the SE was released, MINI was very proud of the fact that they dampen the torque to avoid wheel spin. They consider it a feature that the wheels don't slip. Trying the various traction control settings might help some, the thread on traction control settings has details.
 
They are definitely holding back power, but I don’t think it’s the traction control. The SE is like 0.1 seconds slower to 60 than the JCW. My money is on that, and less wear on the drive shafts.

C&D calls the traction control intrusive, but it’s one of my favorite parts of the car!
 
I have tried launching with DSC off and it doesn’t make a difference. Of course “off” is still not really off, so I’ve even messed around with the dyno “roller mode”, which definitely turns it all the way off (the car is definitely pretty… slide-y…) and still the torque is held back. This is in the context of closed-course autocross driving.

If you have the right grippy tires (I’ve got Bridgestone Potenza RE-71RS), you can put that torque on the road without wheel spin. It is my quest to find a way to unlock that torque (on demand, for racing, not necessarily for daily driving). I used to drive my Tesla around with Ludicrous mode permanently enabled and I was very used to just feathering the pedal for civilized driving in routine circumstances; I bet I could manage all the Cooper SE torque without wheel spin.
 
Unfortunately, if they did allow all of the power from a stop, you'd just get wheel spin, screeching, and smoke... and slower 0-60 times. Yeah, it might wake your neighbors and be more fun, but it doesn't actually make the car go faster. If you want more speed, you'll just need to get a rear-wheel or all-wheel drive EV. My Plaid Model X will smoke almost any other car on the road in a straight line, but my Mini SE is still more fun to drive on the twisty canyons. More "power" doesn't always mean more fun.

Didn't BMW limit the amount of power available immediately on the i3 after it was introduced because there were some motor mounts beings snapped or something?

I hit the limiter this morning on a longish freeway entrance ramp. It was still pulling strong when it hit. I’d be curious to know if the limiter is actually due to concern about some component’s limitations, or can the motor only rev up so much? Inquiring minds, etc.

After a break in traffic on the freeway today, I accelerated with a P90 until I levelled off at 153. He backed off and was content to pace me until we saw another group of cars up ahead and we eased off gradually and joined them at the more usual freeway traffic speed of ~125. I killed off 10% in that 5 km breakaway! Pretty sure the limiter is for battery (and battery temperature) management.
 
Ive tested and recorded all drive mode combinations to see if there would be any improvements to 0-60 and 1/4 mile times. Nothing discernable. Dragy slip and write up is somewhere in my review post.

I was impressed until I saw your speeds in Km lol

Up here you’re going 90 and you feel like you’re going fast — because the posted limit is 62 and most cars cruise at 70-75. Then you drive in Toronto where the same posted limit is considered a joke and at 80 you’re a rolling roadblock… Then go drive pretty much anywhere in the US and everybody’s cruising at 85 or more…

Yes my commute home has the cruise control at the max setting of 90 :eek:
 
I made a number of the BimmerCode changes suggested here and am very pleased with all but one! I changed the HUD to Sports display (1 of 2, and 2 of 2) in the Headunit and in the iDrive system. Everything looks fine, except that I now have a useless white circle in the HUD (with a bit of red) and no Navigation info. The only way to get Nav info is to leave Sport mode. Is this normal or have I missed something?
 
Huh. I haven’t noticed, but TBH I don’t use the MINI nav, just Google Maps (which isn’t fed to the HUD). I made that coding change as well, so I’ll try it out tomorrow.
