Battery Recall for Canadian Kona Owners

Well I think if there is any truth to what they said about Transport Canada , maybe that's where we need to complain too. I've just gotten my battery replaced but that was after complaining and writing emails/letters. I still like the Kona but it will take me some time to get confidence that this issue has been solved. My wife is still terrified of it and she use to love it more then me. I mentioned the 5 buck a day thing but the Service manager said he would look into it and get back to me but I've heard that before.

Keep on the service manager it's there for you I hope, don't let them tell you any thing else.
 
New battery in!
Here is the picture of the before/after tag as requested. My BMS ROM ID/battery seem to be older than some that got it replaced before me ... Oh well!
Just finished charging to 100% and got 478 kms on the GOM, will see how the new battery performs. Fingers crossed for no more trips to the dealership for a while now.

I did, the person I spoke with @ service was clueless but apparently the manager was aware as Hyundai Canada has been in touch with them. I was told they would "look into it" and by Hyundai support (email / Roman) that they would make sure to follow-up with the service manager of the dealership so that the request is submitted.
I still have not received the 250$ gift card requested in July (As confirmed by the service person). I'm confident I'll get the 250$ at some point, and say moderately optimistic for the 5$/day ... Will continue to ask @ dealership and customer support regularly.
 
I just talked to the dealership that sold me my 2019 Kona. They ordered the battery for me while I was on the phone, and said it would take 4-5 weeks to come in. Does that sound reasonable? I'll ask about the $5/day thing when they call about an appointment. And I'll ask about the extended warranty.

I'm getting antsy again so am considering calling my dealer (I'm a glutton for disappointment). Two questions for you: Why did they order the battery for you while you were on the phone (i.e. what convinced them)? Why hadn't they done it ages ago?

I amazed that they can order the battery over the phone but they can't call that number and say, hey when's the battery delivery date. Hehe

I am starting to put together a bit of a pattern in battery replacements with P/N's and ROM ID's. Although I will point out that I have a limited amount of data.

It "looks like" 2019 models (both preferred/ultimate trim packages) had original P/N's that are: 37501-K4050 and are being replaced with 37501-K4050AS.
It "looks like" 2021/2022 models have original P/N's that are 37501-K4054 and are being replaced (in my case) by 37501-K4054AS.

Still not sure what the AS means, I am "hopeful" that it indicates an improvement to the pack that wasn't necessarily well advertised by Hyundai. Perhaps it just indicates that they are not the original pack?

I would ask anyone that "thinks" they are about to get a replacement pack to please take a photo of your existing pack and then post the old and new photos, also include the model year and trim level.

Well to add to all the confusion I was at my dealer today. This is what I was told. Transport Canada is turning the screws on Hyundai to get the batteries replaced ASAP. My dealer told me they are complying....
I got a similar story from my service advisor, who said TC wants the recall finished by end March. But, surprise surprise, the replacement batteries are in short supply. Mine is said to be a month out, if deliveries stay on schedule. I have an Ultimate, Dec 2018 build.
 
Slowly decoding Hyundai battery numbers.
Here is what I think I know:
Hyundai use a 10 digit part number for all parts? This seems to be true.
The first 5 digits are unique to a type of part and the remaining 5 digits are model specific.
Looking at a traction battery:
P/N: 37501 - K4054

37501 is the generic part type. In this case, 37501 is a "Battery system assembly". All Hyundai BSA's start with this number (kona's, ioniq etc). OK, halfway there.
The remaining 5 digits are year/model specific.
'K' means Korean made? This is a guess, but is consistent with how the "K" in hyundai VIN numbers work. Any hyundai VIN that starts with K is made in Korea.
The remaining 4 digits are still year/model specific.
4050 seems to be only for 2019, maybe 2020 Konas. Doesn't seem to have anything to do with trim level?

Perhaps the difference between 2019/2020 batteries and 2021/2022 batteries has something to do with how they bolt to the chassis or what kind of coolant system was used or battery heater (winter in canada?). Maybe they are different lengths and widths? Maybe they contain different BMS modules? Looking for thoughts on this.
So, the "AS" tacked onto the end of the part number. No solid information on this, but I have found a couple of other parts in hyundai searches that have AS on the end of them. They appear to all be "replacement parts" or parts that didn't come with the vehicle off the assembly line.
So...throwing this out there. Does "AS" simply stand for "after sale"...of the vehicle. A quick way for a service person to tell if a part has been replaced on a vehicle?

There's going to be a small problem with this. Here in Canada we're used to thinking the first digit of the VIN is the country code: K for South Korea, J for Japan, 1, 4 or 5 for the USA, 2 for Canada, etc. But it doesn't actually work like that. The first digit K is assigned to vehicles made in four Asian countries: South Korea, Israel, Sri Lanka and Kazakhstan. Vehicles made in these three other countries also have VINs that begin with K. Those made in South Korea get the first two digits KL through KR, while Kazakhstan gets KS though K0. Astana Motors makes Hyundai cars, trucks and buses under licence at an assembly plant in Almaty, Kazakhstan, mostly using parts imported from South Korea. Hyundais made in Almaty would roll off the line with a VIN starting with K.

Hyundai has seven vehicle assembly plants outside South Korea. A Kona made in the Czech Republic would have a VIN beginning with the two letters TP through TJ.

I complained again to hyundai Canada a few days ago, and mentioned that I was told more than a month ago that I was next in line to get my battery, and that it never arrived, and guess what, my dealer called yesterday to say my battery was in and now I have an appointment to have it replaced next Wednesday.
