Range when using the recommended captivity of the battery (30-80%). Battery longevity, quirkiness of public charges, cold weather range reduction, etc... Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Well, a person who just moved 80 miles away from the city, who has never owned or thought about an EV before, hasn’t wrapped their head around it... it is hard for us, on the other side, to be fair about their perceptions and fears. I do not think it is unreasonable for a person to be afraid that an electric car will run out of juice. Especially when they haven’t learned about how to navigate around the idea you don’t just fill up at 1/4 tank in 10 minutes. Actually, I’m still confused about your comment. I did not mean to imply that my mother-in-law’s husband was unreasonable. I didn’t comment on it. I just commented on how unlikely it would be for him to overcome those fears.
I'm actually trying to figure this out as well, as my garage has a NEMA 5-20 this would make a big difference charging the SE... Does anyone know if it's possible?
My garage is on 20 A circuit with NEMA 5-15 outlets. I set my car's level 1 charging to max which is supposed to be 15 A, but using the supplied cable it never drew above 10 A which is the rating on the charge cable.
The granny charger has a maximum current, no matter what plug you plug it in to. I have the 8A one that came with the car, and a variable one (6-10A). Like you, my garage is on a good size circuit so I can run it at 10A. This cuts a few hours off the total charge time. I get around 7% per hour with the 10A rather than 5% on the 8A. You lose around 400W from the charger to power the cars systems, the cooling/heating and inefficiency. Hence, the 10A charges faster than just 10/8 times faster. For normal use, it easily charges overnight to full - and if I need something quicker, I have a DC charger 10 minutes away. Setting the car to max will just use the max current supported by the charger. To get 15A, you need a 15A charger. Oh, in case I didn't mention it, I am on 240V.
I suppose MINI's thinking was that 10 A is the safest maximum for standard outlets (in North America) and that's why the cable is limited to that even though the car can draw more. I've thought of investing in a 120/240 V replacement that would go up to 15 A for level 1, but since I got my level 2 EVSE installed I never use the supplied cable, and if I ever travel again it's probably the safest choice as an emergency charging cable.
Detail request: The charge port is on the back of the passenger side, right? How far from the back end is it? I’m trying to place my EVSE to cover the two positions in my garage where it could sit (front or back, it’s a two-deep, not two-wide garage). Unfortunately, the side with power is the drivers side (we do not back in). So I will wrap it around the car one way or the other to plug it in. Also, can someone confirm the car is 153” long?
I just took a yardstick outside in the dark with a flashlight. The center of the charge port cover is on the passenger's side, 29-30" from the back of the rear bumper. My year-old list of specs has the length at 151.6". Don't know the 2022 SE's length.
Got my 40a circuit installed this morning. Had the JuiceBox ready. It's on my network! Now I just need a car to plug it into!
As an update to this, it appears I can use a Tesla Tap (or some knockoff) to convert a tesla mobile connector to j1772 and charge my MINI at a full 16A off a nema 5-20. Also allows installing a Tesla level 2 charger down the road and use it for both my model 3 and the MINI...
I will confirm when I have all the equipment, I haven't tested it myself yet. Actually hoping someone can prove me wrong before I order a tesla tap
The combo seems ideal, practical, and portable. On paper it should work and I hope it does as I’ve committed $ to it. Gen 2 Tesla Mobile Connector -check- Tesla NEMA 5-15 (bundled) -check- Tesla NEMA 14-50 -check- TeslaTap Mini -check- MINI Cooper SE: awaiting carrier assignment Sadly, it’ll probably be at least mid-May when I take delivery of the MINI and can run tests. I’ll circle back and update.
One call to support, simple re-establishment of network and its online! Now, truly, I’m ready for a car
