  1. That's a way to go to get a car! Good thing for having it delivered. You may want to check out some snow tires as the Nexens aren't the best for that. (lots of good info on replacements on this forum). Have fun with your new ride:)

The game the MD dealers play is to subtract things like freight (that you have no choice to pay), or include all possible discounts (most of which you aren't eligible for). It makes their cars pop to the top for online searches. There is one dealer that is particularly bad in this area, but the online fine print tells you what the online price includes.

Once you start talking to a live person, you get a better idea what the real price is.

I believe that all dealers advertise with all eligible discounts even though most won't qualify for any. Not including freight in the price is straight up fraud. It is part of the MSRP. There are still MD dealers that still offer $2k off MSRP after all the fake discounts. Their initial price just shows $4500 off while in reality, it's $2000 off.

I personally got about $2200 off MSRP $2500 considering the dealer fee of $300.

From a California Dealers website, so to get $1400 off you need to be in the military and be a first responder and be a recent college grad. Hmmm how many of those do we have?

I think that's about what I got when I finally signed the papers. I suppose they have an awareness that people travel far and wide to get these cars, so they are unlikely to make steeper cuts in the prices.

  8. Thanks!

What I did was to use the inventory search and picked 10 cars that I liked (exterior/interior color). For each one I requested a break-down that shows the MSRP, any discounts and fees. Many of them tried to give me just a total number, so I had to ask again. The actual sale price (after any discounts) was usually in between $1900 below and MSRP (all East coast) and one guy in California asking $10,000 over ?!! The different dealers have also different doc fees, etc. The cheapest offer was from Heritage Hyundai Towson - $1900 below MSRP. I liked it a lot but my wife did not like the ceramic blue color :(. I think it is nice but had to make a compromise. The one I picked at the end was Galactic Gray and was $1400 below MSRP. They also had very reasonable doc. fees. The shipping was $1150 for 1600+ miles which is not bad I think. I found the shipping company myself. They are actually shipping brokers. They post the order on a board and the actual trucking companies decide if this is something they want to do. The trucking company got $900 and the difference ($250) goes to the shipping broker. There was a broker whose offer was $950 but I did not feel good about them.

Some of the dealerships told me they did not have any discounts on EVs and insisted on the MSRP even when I told them I got better offers. Some of them even told me that Kona EV was not that popular - they sold just few for the entire 2019. People were curious but not actually buying them. Strange.

Anyway, I am glad I got mine. I am still waiting for the title, so I can register it. The dealership did not send the paperwork to get the title for some reason. They also collected the Colorado sales tax. Some people say they paid it when they registered the car in their state. I would appreciate if you share more details about the registration process and how you obtained a title. I realize there might be differences between the different states but it will not hurt to know how this works.

Trying to buy a Hyundai Kona EV in Texas from Maryland, since that is the closest. It is anxiety provoking to buy a car from afar. Can someone comment on why they chose the ultimate vs the limited. Is it worth the price difference with a bigger screen? how long did the whole process take to have the car shipped? Thanks!

  11. There are more differences than just the bigger screen. You can compare the trims here:
    https://www.hyundaiusa.com/kona-electric/specifications.aspx

Chose the trim that works best for you.

Once the car is ready to ship it takes a day or two to actually find a truck. In my case the actual travel time was 3 days from NY to Colorado.

If you are interested I can share the information of the shipping company in a private message.

  13. If you do a lot of highway driving especially near larger metropolitan areas you might appreciate the radar guided adaptive cruise control with stop and go in the ultimate, I know that would be something that might sway my decision towards the higher end mode. Fortunately here in Canada they include that on the lower end trim.

The ACC is one of the features I like the most. It makes heavy traffic a lot less stressful.

Now that I got used to it, I actually enjoy the ACC in heavysstop and go traffic at 40 km/hr or less. Still get nervous when using it at 80km/hr or higher because it waits too long for me before slowing down and breaking.

The downside in heavy traffic is staying awake at the wheel. :)

Has any Texas resident bought a Kona EV. If yes what dealership did you use and what was the process like.

    Thanks

I'm in Texas also. Just went to my local dealer over the weekend to get info on having a Kona Electric ordered. Waiting on a call from my sales rep regarding my options.
