High-Pitched Motor Noise

I had my E710 motor replaced due to the tapping noise on my Niro. Now I hear the hissing sound with the E712 motor. From one strange noise to another...
 
I rented a Niro for a few days (not a Kona owner, to recap) and, wow.
There was a high static high pitched whine or bearing sound audible from around 25-80+ mph, separate from typical modulating motor whine. 60-80 mph was the worst. Awful, awful sound, like a dentist drill in my left ear. Is this what you are hearing in the Kona?

I am trying to find evidence that the noise is inherent of the car and to just ignore it. I don't hear them inside a basement car park with the windows up and VESS off but my daughter could still faintly detect it.

I am now driving a facelift Kona (June 2021 YOM) and have clocked only 200kms. I can confirm that the high pitch hissing noise with the driver window down is as audible as my previous 2019 Kona. With the windows up, I hear much less, probably due to better overall sound insulation of the facelift Kona.

Doesn't bother me too much as I drive with the windows up all the time.
 
I’ve had this issue in my 2020 IONIQ EV since brand new. Brought it up with dealer once. They also said it was normal but curiously told me to “keep an eye on it.” I’m wondering whether to bother bringing it up again when so many on this thread have said it’s not going to go away. My dad’s 2019 IONIQ EV also has it so it’s definitely inherent. Has anyone ever managed to get a service centre to stop the sound?

I would be very curious to know whether the IONIQ 5 also has this problem or if it’s using totally different components. Which I would sincerely hope being a whole new platform.
 
I know this is a bit of an old thread but since I contributed and just had my motor replaced under warranty (not due to hissing sound but rather other low-speed "clicking" or "cards in spoke" sound that appeared around 50 k KMs), I wanted to chime in.
The hissing is still 100% there, no changes whatsoever. The cards in wheel spoke sound appears to be gone at least. And this is the newer 0E702 motor assembly/model that they installed (found on Kona 2021s and newer I was told) whereas previous was 0E700 so ... It is truly by design it would seem and it hasn't been fixed even on later generations/versions of the motor. A shame really. Here's to hoping the newer GMP models (Ioniq 5, 6, etc.) don't have this flaw.

Just the motor not the gearbox?

Seems to be up to the whims of the servicing mechanic and approval by Hyundai corporate technical advisors. I only had my motor replaced, I really had no choice in the matter. It did solve the driveline chatter but now after 1 year and 30,000 km on the new motor the chatter is back. There was never any improvement to the hiss sound which is likely "normal" harmonics from the inverter.

The clicking sound is back? Was your replacement motor a 701 or 702?

Yes its back, the replacement was a 701 motor. The current servicing tech thinks its a motor mount problem. I waiting on parts that don't believe will resolve it but whatever what do I know.
 
Had my car in today. They installed an updated motor mount kit and replaced all the traction motor and reduction gear box mounting bolts. Apparently there is a TSB that address this. They also replaced a noisy steering wheel bearing( I didn't even appreciate this as a problem, nice). It seems to have done the trick as the car is silent again. I had them check my gearbox oil and it was reported as fine.

It looks like since they replaced my battery , I seems I'm hearing I guess that hockey card noise now but also a noise I hear when accelerating also. Looks like I have read up on that hockey card noise.
I'm not impressed.

Nice! Any idea on the TSB # for the motor mounts and gearbox bolts replacement?
I am due for year 1 service, if I have that # I could get them to look it up and see if it applies to the 21 models as well;)

No sorry, my work order refers to a TSB but does not identify which one.

Sounds like you got really lucky. My dealership don’t want to hear it. They’ve brushed it off three times now with different excuses, the last one was ‘rust on the brake disk. Turn regen off’. Although I have an Ioniq not a Kona so they probably wouldn’t even take this thread as evidence. I’ve given up any hope of getting the issue fixed. I’ll just have to live with it for the remaining two years of my lease.

Really this whole thing should be a recall but Hyundai don’t care about these models anymore.

Oh trust me luck has nothing to do with it. Whatever "luck" I have has been hard earned. I have been having problems with my Kona from the first month of my relatively "long" 2 year ownership . In the past 2 years I have had over 14 non maintenance related service visits, 2 two of these involved tow ins because the car was bricked or otherwise dead. Most of that time it felt like my dealer was indifferent or ignoring me. I had to collect my own evidence with video files of the noise on several occasions. It was very time consuming and frustrating . Honestly, I was just as sick of seeing my dealer as he was of me. I sadly now know everyone's name in the service and management departments.

That said at some point after sending letters documenting my dealer's indifference to Hyundai corporate my dealer clearly got some negative feedback and about a year ago they started to treat me like someone who was not a complete idiot. All of a sudden I was getting personal attention from the service manager, owner, access to loaner vehicles that were impossible to get previously, and they were comping me on non warranty repairs. It was weird being initially treated like a crazy homeless person and then a relative VIP.

My advice is keep bringing this up to them or find a better dealer.

Good morning

Could someone " fix " the noise? in other forums and especially to a video on youtube, change the engine and reducer and did not solve it, I think it really has to come from the regeneration part since with the car off, if I drop down a slope you do not hear absolutely nothing, instead when it is on if, even if it is in NEUTRAL mode. So it is ruled out that it is something "mechanical" since completely turned off nothing is squeezed.
