Well, there is Honda Roadside Assistance. If you’re 50 miles from nowhere, with no spare, you’re going to have to wait for someone to show up. Unless it can be repaired with the kit.

The problem being that even if there is a tire store just a block away, Honda Roadside Assistance requires you to be towed to the nearest Honda dealership, even if it is 50 miles away.

There’s a solution for almost every problem. If I had a tire that couldn’t be repaired with the Junior Ranger Kit in the trunk, I’d mosey on down to the open tire store a block away and inform them of my predicament.

I like the 18" spoked wheel. That's probably the extent of what I like. I'd say that the 135/70R18 tire is too small. It is 3.5% smaller in diameter (or circumference) than the Clarity stock OEM tires. I like the 145/80/17 option much better since it is less than 1% smaller than the Clarity OEM tires. You can buy this tire on a Infiniti Aluminum spoked wheel and all you need are lugs for the wheel and the hub-centric rings for Infiniti to Honda. Here is the Infiniti Wheel for comparison:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Rim-Wheel-...-Fits-08-09-INFINITI-EX35-685566/313379663534

Also, I loved that they imply that driving at 81 mph with their spare is fine just because it is speed rated at 81 mph. Forget the fact that the tires are really mismatched on the car, compromising the heck out of the handling and stability.

The Infiniti spare is the one I use. Here is a picture of how I mounted it.

It looks like I may be the source of this mess. Looks like I posted the link to an incorrect ebay auction for the lug nuts. I sincerely apologize. I am not sure how this happened as I bought the 12mm x 1.5 and can't believe I pointed to an auction other than those I bought (they are even black and I bought silver). It would really be nice to clean this up. The lugs should be 12mm x 1.5. Maybe @Domenick can delete the faulty links...

Edited to add:
Ok. I figured out how I caused this mess. I posted the link to the auction for the 20 quantity 12x1.5 acorn silver lug nuts I bought. If you find it and copy the link into the buffer it shows:

".ebay./itm/20-12x1-5-Lug-Nuts-for-Chevy-S10-Buick-LaCrosse-Skylark-Avenue-Cadillac-Wheels/311374437719?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649"

I deleted the "www" start to keep the link from compressing into a clickable link here so I could show it in full form. That auction expired and passed time keeps it from being viewable now. Instead of an error saying auction is no longer available to view, the link now goes to the black 12x1.25 lug nuts. What a pain, but I guess I learned that links may not always go to the same place in the future, especially for ebay... In my ebay history this same auction shows the picture of silver 20 12x1.5 lug nuts I bought, not these black 12x1.25 with a key.

I was curious if anyone has actually had to use a spare tire on their Clarity? Or stories of just using the repair kit that came with the car.

So the lug nuts are 1.5? not 1.25? want to confirm
post 65 still links to 1.25...

Yes, they are 12x1.5

I tore a pretty big hole in one a little over a year ago. I had a full size spare in the trunk at the time, so changed it and drove it home (about 100 miles). I eventually "repaired" the tire by doubling up a couple of larger "plugs". It would hold for a couple of months and then start a slow leak. I replaced the plugs a couple of times to stop the slow leak (but each time it eventually returned), and eventually replaced the tire when almost to the treadwear indicator. I don't want to ever use the sealant, just because I hate gumming up the resonators in the wheels, so I will stay with carrying plugs and a spare.

Was your spare from an Infinity? How did it fit? Do the honda lug nuts fit ok?

I have a full sized Nissan Maxima 18x8 wheel (v pattern) that looks like this:

I think this Nissan Maxima wheel design has the same +50 offset as well...

s-l500.jpg

These will either use acorn (conical) or mag-type lugs. The one I have uses mag-type. Both will need the 64.1 mm to 66.1 mm hub centric ring adapter.

I also have the 17" Infiniti spoked aluminum temporary spare. It uses acorn (radial) lugs (but some of these also use mag-type so you have to see the wheel to know) and also needs the 64.1 to 66.1 hub centric ring adapter.

Thanks. I'm trying to find out here instead on the side of the road..

Just realized I erroneously put "Acorn (radial)" in the last part of my post. It should be "Acorn (Conical)". The original OEM lug nuts on the Honda Clarity are radius seats (ball, rounded, semi-circular). Acorn type are straight line tapered, like a cone. Sorry for the error.

Sorry to bump such an old thread.

I recently bought a 07-08 G35 17x4 Donut Spare (unfortunately I wasn't careful and it was a 165/80/R17 instead of the 145/80/R17 and this means the tire I bought was too large.

I'm going to have to replace the tire to the 145/80/R17 but something I can't quite figure out is the lug nut situation - do the Honda ones not work?

do the Honda ones not work?
Perhaps they would work in an emergency if that's all you had, but they are not the correct shape for the Infiniti wheel.
As describe eloquently by @Robert_Alabama above, you need Acorn (conical) nuts.

These are what I purchased last year:

Amazon products sometimes come and go, so here is a screenshot of the details:

* Make sure you have a compatible wrench - I bought a 'kit' with the spare that included a jack and a lug wrench.
The Infinity lug wrench did not fit, and I had to get a different one.

Also, you need the 64.1 to 66.1 hub-centric ring adapter.

You may have trouble finding a replacement tire. I don't think it is too common to replace them, but as you know, the tire you bought is about 4% too large. The 145/80/R17 is not perfect, but it is only off by 0.7%.

Thank you, this helps immensely, and was more useful than trying to decipher all the pages in this thread. Much appreciated!

This thread is old. But if I found it and just used it, so someone else out there is probably still reading it. I'm sort of cheap, and I over research everything.

After considering all my options and everything listed here, I went with the 145/80/r17 found on Infiniti/Nissan products. It is the closest in size of any doughnut tire that will fit (.7/.8% different), including the ones listed as "Clarity spares", which really is all aftermarket since according to Honda a clarity spare does not exist.

Since this thread started the prices on ebay and such have gone way up. Locally on craigslist a guy had a used Infiniti doughnut for $120. I live in Phoenix (large city) so I started with junkyards. Via phone/internet they were $50-60 but sight unseen. LKQ would ship me one for about $75-90 depending on year but also sight unseen. I ended up at a pick a part self serve junkyard. All the infiniti G series spares were missing but I found several Maximas in the 08-12' years that had the 145/80/17 spares. To be clear, I found other Maximas with 16" spares so it appeared to be dependent on trim and wheel for the Maximas. I then scoured the Honda/Acura rows and took an clearly never used scissor jack/lugwrench/ assembly out of a 2007 Acura. The wrench is stamped 19mm/3/4". A whopping $38 later I walked with the wheel/tire and a Honda jack/wrench. I debated grabbing the styrofoam tray from one of the vehicles that had cutouts for everything but thought it would take up to much space. For reference if anyone is searching online junkyards it will be listed as the 17x4 spare (which does not totally guarantee the correct tire, just wheel)

I went home and put it all on. In a pinch, it would work and I would not fault someone for just tightening it on and crossing fingers but I agree with the issues regarding the lugnuts (get 12x1.5, I got a 4 pack on amazon, yes, its one short but its for emergencies-4 correct and one incorrect tight will be fine) and spacer 64.1 to 66.1. Those items set me back about $15.

With those items its as good a fix as any factory doughnut would have been. And way cheaper than any of the sold "kits". My only issue is the tire itself is getting a bit old and dated but the one I got clearly had never left its cozy home under the carpet of its trunk. It is my intention that I never ever use this setup. But for long distance travel the can of dried up fix a flat that it came with as a "fix" is absurd it you hit something on the roadway. I would only use this if I had a blowout between nowhere and nowhere. So I find it highly unlikely, but if by chance the purchased older doughnut spare tire that I put on in an emergency roadside repair did in fact had a blowout driving to the next town, I couldn't be in any worse shape than I was at the first blowout if I never had a spare!

Thanks for everyone that put info in this thread over the years. I found it incredibly helpful.

Did you secure your spare somehow to keep it from moving around in an accident? Where and how did you store the jack?
