From the Volkswagen PR today (Out 19, 2017). "Volkswagen is developing an all-electric race car for the world’s most renowned mountain race. The all-wheel drive prototype is scheduled to be at the start of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb in Colorado, USA on 24 June 2018. Its goal: to set a new record for electric cars at the finish line which is at 4,300 metres elevation. The new motorsport project is part of Volkswagen’s process of transforming itself into the leading producer of electric vehicles. By 2025, the Volkswagen brand will already be offering 23 all-electric models."

Volkswagen is by far the leading producer of vaporware EVs. They really have no competition in the field.

Will VW actually be offering 23 all-electric cars by 2025? Maybe, but given many past broken promises on the subject, it seems extremely unlikely.
 
Hi Joao, good article thanks for that. I think 2017 will go down as the year that mainstream woke up to the EV story. I drove a Model S for the first time a couple of days ago and let me tell you this.
EV,s will be more economical than ICE very soon which will fire up the take up of EV,s quickl,y but from sheer driving pleasure people will want to drive them they are so much fun!!!!!
 
Hi Glenn, much people are feeling that a single breakthrough in the battery field (charging time, solid state components, new super capacitors, etc) will accelerate this necessary and inevitable conversion, but we must remember that the electrical grid in most countries will not support a fast conversion... So, anyways... the egg needs to be born first with the first (mutant) chicken inside.

There was a report that they were close to signing a contract for a large amount of li-ion batteries with LG Chem, but no word that the deal was finalized. As usual, both EV makers and battery makers are keeping mum about their contracts.

I certainly hope that deal was signed! If it was, then that shows a real commitment on the part of VW; a commitment that none of their dozens or hundreds of broken EV vaporware promises indicates.
 
Yep VW said it needed 40 giga factories for batteries by 2025 but then turned around and told its dealers that EVs in the US will only make up 10-15% of of its sales at most in 2025. Is it smoking Trump Admin crack? So who is it lying to? Is it lying to its dealers or German regulators or both?

I think the German Government should break VW up into a billion pieces and take the name out of circulation permanently, cash out the share holders for pennies on the dollars and find a way to fire or further prosecute its upper management or just straight up revoke its charter and injunct it from doing business while any court challenge persists and still do the rest of it. Its profit and its share holder (?) so f-ing what, the public comes first and its contempt of public which is dangerous. What Obama did with GM will be mild compared to what's foreseeable here. Just retire the affected workers early, don't let this company hide behind its workers just do right by them regardless. But if I remember correctly Germany couldn't even get a coalition government because it could deal with moribund coal in Germany, but the people will presumably fix that Germany pushes green hard and helped finance China's start in solar if memory serves.
 
Well, if a gigafactory is only producing 1gigawatt hours of batteries, then that’s only 40GWh. Which is less than 1 million cars per year. So could be about right as VW sells about 10million cars per year.

Or if you reverse engineer it, 15% of 10million is 1.5 million. Assuming 60kWh batteries that’s a need of 90GWh of batteries. Spread across 40 factories, that’s 2.25GWh Per factory. Still seems in the realm of reality.
 
Oh, also, the US is a smallish market for VW and they only sold about 1.5million vehicles in the US last year of those 10million. And as they are probably only looking to make sure they comply with US CAFE standards, which are weaker than Budweiser piss beer, they will probably be shipping those BEVs more to European countries and China.
