Maybe if that "resolver calibration" thing I posted about had been
acknowledged by the dealer and/or Hyundai, it could help prevent
this sort of thing from developing in the first place?? Seems
farfetched, but if electrical torque winds up mismatched to the
position, perhaps the resulting forces over time could start to
"shake things loose". Even if we can't feel/hear anything at first.

HK *really* needs to get off its arse and interact with the owner
community about this.

I second that , seems to be a gong show ...so far

Well mine didn't have it at new, and now at 7,000Km or so I can hear the hiss as long as I've got the windows down, the VESS off and I'm in a car park next to a wall. I'll bring it to the dealer's attention at the 15K service, if only so that I have a written record of reporting the problem. We'll see what happens. No other odd sounds.... yet.

I’ve recently passed the 5,000 mile mark on my Kona, and the sound that began around 2,000 miles has become much louder and nearly constant. At low speeds it sounds like something rubbing rotationally. At high speeds it sounds more like a whine, or a jet engine when I floor the accelerator. This sound happens on both acceleration and deceleration, regardless of the level of regenerative braking. I can even cause it to appear and disappear with variable acceleration or deceleration.

Colin, is this the same sound that you experienced? I haven’t taken it in to Hyundai yet, but I’m going to soon because it’s starting to drive me up the wall.

Thank you!

I have been closely monitoring this situation in other owners cars, but to add perspective to the discussion I crossed 20,000 km this weekend and have not had any issues like this (yet!) Our car was an early build unit from Dec 2018

Hmmm, interesting, my car is also a Dec 2018 build, and just over 15,500 kms (since May 1). And no issues or noises with mine either.

3000 miles and an occasional rumbling ("baseball card in the bicycle spokes") type noise when accelerating at very low speeds. Car manufactured in March, 2019. Haven't brought it to the dealer yet because I can't replicate it on demand.

Same mileage, same symptoms; manufacture Dec 22/18

Reading through some of the comments, I do have a light sandpaper type noise at low speeds when using regeneration since the car was new. That noise has not changed or gotten louder.. I always assumed that it's the noise that the regeneration system makes as it has been there since new. It's not very loud and can only be heard with the windows down. If VESS would be on, you could not even hear it. It's not loud enough to bother me and it was there since new. Well, I turned off VESS after about 1 to 2 weeks of ownership and that's when I noticed that sound which I assumed as being normal..

Thanks for the feedback and thoughts. I am still sitting on my hands, waiting for an update. Customer service has been helpful, but not fully proactive.

As I am in SoCal, and very close to Hyundai Motors America, they sent the engineering team out to have a look. The engineers swapped the direction of one of the mounting brackets to see if that resolve any issues. As suspected, it did not. I will keep you all posted of any developments.

By any chance, is the dealer you used Tustin Hyunda (close to Hyundai Motors America)? I've been having a problem with a clicking noise on acceleration/deceleration similar to those in another thread: https://www.insideevsforum.com/community/index.php?threads/disappointed.6584/

I'm worried the dealership will blow me off even with all the information I've gathered.

Call Hyundai Consumer Affairs. We had a problem with the heating unit (no heat) and car was in the shop for more than 30 days while they sourced the part from Korea. Consumer affairs said they can reimburse us for lease payments and some other incidentals while the car was in the shop. You have to wait to bill them until you get the car back but it’s worth opening a case while you wait.

No, I used Temecula Hyundai. Sorry to hear about that. My clicking noise is now back, although intermittent. Keep you all posted!

No, I experienced it only on coasting to a stop, thought it was the regenerative breaking. Very much sounded like a bad bearing. Almost like a roulette table slowing to a stop.

WHAT?
They replaced your gearbox and motor and now the sound has come back????
I worry that this could be a design flaw with no easy fix rather than a defective part. Either way, I hope Hyundai does right by its customers and handles this issue appropriately. So far, there’s no indication that they’ve actually concluded or acknowledged a systemic issue.

The lower gear drive replacement to fix the noise issue did not work for other owners. I suspect it's the actual electric motor causing the noise. Other owners also have this noise issue around the 9000 mile range. I'm only at 3000 mile and it's starting to be quite noticeable driving with the windows down. When it gets to the 9000 mile mark it's so loud that it can be heard with the windows up and the music on. I think they will have to replace the motors on most of the EV's in the future.

Wow ... as a new 2020 KONA EV owner this makes me very nervous.
