Small issues/quirks

No, there are only options in there when to auto lock and unlock. Like on shift or at a certain speed. But you cannot actually disable it.

Oh, I just realized that even though I can't disable auto lock, I can set it to auto-unlock again when I put it in Park. So that gets me where I want, although the loud clicks when it automatically locks and later unlocks just bug me - I hate it when my devices think they know what's best for me!

Hopefully Hyundai has a good supply of actuators

We were sounding a little squeaky too and tried what some people were commenting about with brakes needing to be used more than we do. So we found quiet back lanes and got up to speed on some downhill stretches, went into neutral, and applied the brakes. I think the squeaking went away. We will try to do that weekly.

Just to hit on what @Wildeyed was asking about - you can see my full post in another topic created by a different user about high-pitched noise. I’m so happy someone else is experiencing the issue. The dealer essentially told me it’s normal and brake-related. I completely disagree.

What you’re referring to @CJC doesn’t sound like what we’re experiencing.
This is a very obnoxious high-pitched “mechanical” sounding squeal at low speeds. Sounds like rusty brakes or a bearing in need of lubricant. If you refer to the other post mentioned above - the user was able to put the car on a hoist and capture the sound PERFECTLY. I was unable to do so with a go pro or phone camera strapped to my car.

It definitely shouldn’t be making this sound and if it’s “normal” as my dealership states, then unfortunately my joyful pastime of cruising country roads in summer with the windows down and radio off will sadly be coming to an end. There is no way I can permanently live with that sound. I suppose my hearing is just a little too sensitive and after 20/30 mins of window-down driving, it drives me absolutely bonkers and I’m forced to retreat into my dark, insulated cabin and turn on the radio lol

Here’s the post I was referring to.
There’s a video attached and you can clear-as-day hear the high pitched noise through the VESS sound.

OK. So we put the car up on a lift today and spun the tires (do not try this at home). I turned regen to zero (very important! the higher the regen, the more the wheels would accelerate and then slam to a stop). When I took my foot all the way off the brake The wheels would accelerate (creep?) to around 10mph, then regen back down. It would do this repeatedly indefinitely. The high pitched sound is clearly audible, almost like a hiss.
We poked around all under the vehicle including the wheel wells. We're almost positive this is NOT coming from the wheels/brakes. It didn't sound like it was, plus when we spun the wheels with the car in neutral, we didn't hear the sound (which matches not hearing the sound when you let off the throttle while driving).
We then lowered the car almost all the way to the ground and popped the hood. Again, it seemed as though the sound was coming from the center of the "engine" bay. Also, with the hood up, it sounded much more like an electric hiss than mechanical rubbing. We thought it might be coming from the inverter, but that could've been wishful thinking.
Video is here. The VESS is audible. So is the more typical EV motor sound. But so is the high pitched noise.

So here's a quirk... bird ****. Has anyone else been getting hit a lot in their Kona electric? I don't even have 500 miles yet and I've had massive bird dumps on my car THREE times now. No I do not park under a tree, no there aren't migrating flocks of birds nearby, etc etc. It is starting to make me wonder if the VESS is annoying birds and they end up losing their bowels. Or maybe they don't appreciate what we're doing for them by driving environmentally friendly cars ;)

Seriously though, I had my previous car for 2 1/2 years and don't remember it getting dumped on even once. Three times in 480 miles seems like more than coincidence.

My mother said it was lucky to get dumped on by birds, so you should go out a buy a lottery ticket:)

VESS a cloaca relaxant? Ha ha! Could be. My white Kona is getting bombed more that the old, black BMW was. But maybe it's just the many-birdy season and the high-activity season among our feathered friends. I think my abbreviated memory may be deceiving me.

I've written before about my grief with eagles and bees. But apart from that, what the Kona seems to attract most is dirt. The back end needs cleaning almost every day, if the window is not to admit an even gloomier light into the black interior.

There is a setting for this hopefully you have it enabled:

All suvs and hatchbacks have this problem, but I agree, it seems a little worse with the kona EV. Maybe I just look at it more often!!

I noticed a small rip in the fabric on the inside left bottom steering wheel , when taking it in to dealer he pointed out a second scratch on the opposite side as well. Probably from factory receiving the wheel from third party and gashing with a sharp edge when removing wrapping.
Hyundai would not change the wheel, but on the bright side the dealer covered for repairs (brought in an specialist) and they did a fantastic job! I hope they get reimbursed from Hyundai Corp. I have absolute confidence in this dealer in Nanaimo:

It is such a good feeling to finally have service back up support like this, never before at any other dealer. Special thanks to Brodie Macpherson, service manager.:)

Nice to hear about dealer support.

Small issue that I came across today. We were driving with a friend in the back and we were talking about the SCC (smart cruise control). Or friend was curious what happens if you never touch the steering wheel, so we tested that (just to be clear, it was an empty stretch of hwy and I was ready to take control at all times!).

After about 13-15 seconds it will tell you to put your hands on the wheel and about 5 second later it will disengage. Once you drift close to the lane markers it will sound the lane departure alarm.

And that's my issue!
These alarms are pretty quiet! I think the first "hey, touch the wheel" alarm didn't really have to be loud, however, when it deactivates it should be way more noticable than the little "Bing" that it sounds. Then you drift out of the lane and all it does it "Bing bong Bing".

Imagine you fall asleep. These alarms are NOT enough to get your attention in such a situation.

Besides that I LOVE the SCC! So relaxing! And the stop and go feature is even better! Got stuck in some traffic on the hwy and it's so great to not have to accelerate and break all the time!

Haha, of course not. But I think the follow up alarm could be louder, that's all I'm saying.

Some mornings, always mornings, the shifter buttons are very sticky, sludgy when depressed and the recoil is slow too. It's like when you spill juice or pop on a keyboard. Other times it's nicely clicky and responsive. Has anyone else experienced this?

I've just started using the radio. It seems very weak at holding a signal. Stations don't seem to really lock in solidly. Moreso than any car I've owned. It's sensitive to receiving stations but not keeping them.

Try blowing some air around PB's, not sure on the radio.
