Slowly getting to achieve goal of purchasing EV

What are you looking for with the driving characteristics?

I was also dead set on RWD but ultimately decided on the MINI due to the super low price. The Model 3 was around $37k after rebates and the MINI was only $20k... I couldn't justify the extra 17K just because I wanted RWD. Seems like you don't quite get the same deal up in Canada though.

I do sometimes miss RWD with my MINI but my priority was fun and good handling both of which are influenced more by weight and size than driven wheels.

The range is really the only negative as I'm frequently pushing the ~120mi. No regrets though, the compromises are worth it for the low price.
 
As I Drive around in my normal lifestyle of maybe + 2000 miles a month, more like 2500/3000 my main thoughts are, do I have my charger cord to plug into my USB port to charge my latest Apple Smart phone. It seems its almost always wanting a charge and is basically plugged in 12 out of 24 hours. Now what I see as green life style is 30 years away. What has to happen first is Generation. So until Thorium Nuke Generators happen its mostly a wet dream for me and I see no savings because of start up costs (purchase costs) and continually looking for a place to plug in a charger cord ! At least for the Foreseeable future I got mini marts and pump gas to make my 3000 miles driven monthly goal easy !
I also see more energy used to create the green life than used without it. The long term 100 year time frame is more encourages to me but still thas way past my life span ! Ice is gonna melt in the glass, water levels is a gonna raise, move up out of the valley to the hill is a wiser move is my thinking. Will leave the EV vehicle to the Big City/metro daily commuters. May they go forward with yep, plenty of charging available with them EV's & I am going to dodge that EV7000 lb Crew Cab for many years !

Requirements should always be our guide. However, I would suggest looking at an EV strong, plug-in hybrid like our 2014 BMW i3-REx, 72 mi EV and 78 mi motorcycle engine driven generator.

BMW dropped them so good condition, end-of-lease versions should be available at reasonable prices. Entry fee is low and risk minimal.

A new technology for you, hands on time will teach valuable lessons and you will have the gas engine backup.

I can actually more economically from purchase price onward just drive a Normal Crew Cab. Like I said the 30 year in the future unlimited power supply is just on paper in some safe somewhere. No actual revelance with me. Also the most dangerous drivers on Interstates are Prius going 60 in a 75 mph or Soccer Vans texting. Your pick there but fact !

Sure the future looks great for the normal commuter if he got charging. Why would I want to buy a Hybrid, the cost, the cost, the cost. I look forward to the Electrics of say 20 years from now. But now, NaDa, no way. Like Ford's battery plant Co Partnered for the Lightening, mid decade start up. So 200 MKW battery supply in 10 years. Maybe if they can buy / find the Nickle for the Battery.

To start up in 2025. Also Nickle is needed because the lower voltage design than Tesla requires more storage ! Virtually no Nickle in the US. So ?

Just saw largest world supply of Lithium is an old extinct Volcano in Arizona ! Maybe plans will change quickly ?

As of today I have 4 Chargers within 50 miles of me. All are 50 kw and $.29 a minute. The closest is 30 miles. When I consider the Millions living in the Metro Area it gets unattractive for me to be charging at home with an 80 KW all the time.

  • Announcements don’t cost much an Tesla was excoriated for them.
  • Actually from my Prius days, Sudbury nickel production was a favorite criticism of Prius batteries, less than 1-2 % of the Sudbury output. Regardless, it looks like Tesla is moving towards LFP (lithium-iron-phosphate) cells some day in the future.
  • If you don’t have an external 110 VAC, 15A outlet or the ability to add a NEMA 14/50, wait until your next home.
  • Lithium is cheap and easy to find. Mining is not trivial but solvable.
Always go by your requirements first.

Maybe the wise choice is a 80 amp 240V box to plug all those electric toys into in these coming years of rapid Green growth and unlimited lectrical transmissions ! ...;)

I'm betting on a 2nd__ 200 amp 240V. service to an in the yard transmission pole !
Most likely with a roof over it for elements protection ! Most likely inside a Code protected all weather type of HVAC moisture free Cabinet. Maybe I see it wrong but its the way this is gonna work for all year all conditions problems free outdoor charging in the drive for these 3 or 4 or 5 EV vehicles most all 2030 / 40 families with teens are gonna possess !

The other point for me is like Intel stacking Chips to achieve densities never before and very low power consumption I hope the Solid State Battery is finally proven and is a standard production battery of 2030 when all this EV stuff makes sense to me, just a Rural guy with not much of a crowd around him all the time. Its obvious the solid battery will need a new type of mounting to observe a limited cracking of places in its internal structure micro structure. Latice work cracking kills it for sure ! Mean while the liquid cooled battery has huge problems also.

At least 500' above sea level or actually 900' easily. So its really immaterial what this old world does cause I ain't gonna change what is or what gonna be !
