Show Off your EV Home Charger Setup

I have the Tesla Universal charger on a 60 A circuit. However, my EVs have maximum charge rates of 30 and 32 A. But I'm not happy with the Universal plug. It is stuck in 1772 mode so I have to use an adapter with my Tesla.

Normally the built-in plug comes out either J1772 or Tesla plug mode. But for the past 2-3 months, it only comes out J1772. WD40 helped when it first started but now they won't unlock.

Here is my Level 2 with 5 adjustable charging amperages for my 2023 Mini Cooper SE, which I keep on the 32 amp setting. Installed in lockable electrical box, along with a 40 amp on/off switch........

I installed a Tesla Universal Wall Connector (charger) earlier this year. I have had no problems with accessing either the NACS or the J1772 charging connector. Tesla's instructions are:

To use NACS handle, remove the NACS connector from the holster.
To use J1772 handle, press the black button on the J1772 adapter to remove the handle from the dock.

I would not use WD40, which is more of a solvent. Rather, I would try a dry lubricant between the J1772 and NACS connectors.

I have a Tesla and BMW i3 with their own chargers:

  • Tesla is used for night or longish trips
  • BMW is used for daylight errands around town
Both are scheduled to match peak solar by charging after 10 AM to a maximum of 3.5 kW. When I return, the other EV is fully charged in case I need to run another errand around town. Both start the day fully charged as any solar shortfall is filled by a few kWh from the grid.
