ScanGauge II OBDII Extended PIDS: Temperature

Mo data...took out my trusty scan gauge, had it updated, and have been using it for about a week now.

Today I let my Clarity go to EV 0 and transition to ICE on its own. I did not engage HV mode myself nor did I engage Econ or Sport modes. EV 0 test was 18 min duration for 16 miles. Speeds 0 to 61 mph. Temps 44 to 46 f. Just routine around town driving and since traffic was light, I decided I could take some pics...and be safe at the same time.

The link below will take you to a web page which has 5 sets of pictures, 3 pics in each set. They depict scan gauge data, the center stack and the dashboard. No more than 15 seconds elapsed between the 3 pics per set.

The scan gauge is set to display... MXS...Hybrid battery cell max SOC (%), STC...hybrid battery SOC (%), HBV...hybrid battery voltage (volts) and RPM's.

Some of the highlights?
  • Center stack display went to 0 EV with ~14% on STC...36 mph and transition to HV seamless
  • STC never got lower than 8.14 and fluctuated upwards to ~10
  • MXS dropped to ~20% and was pretty steady after that.
  • HBV got as low as 284
  • Max RPM was ~2800
  • Once again @45 mph SGll displayed ~1600 RPM when engine clutch engaged (+- 5% before disengaging)
  • The blue arc showed up in 4 of the 5 dashboard pics even with 0 EV
  • Center-stack energy flow displayed blue and blue-green flow. It appeared to me the Clarity was throwing a charge to battery to keep close to 10% STC when possible.
  • Last pic is of HondaLink when test complete...8% SOC on Hondalink same as SGll STC.
  • 3 picture sets labeled with time and mileage

Great news, I got some new PIDS to test out and they look promising. I am still in the testing stage as I just received the unit yesterday and I can only view 4 PIDS at any one time. Below are the latest PIDs and my observations so far:

UBC - Usable Battery Capacity (%) - still evaluating, not sure the info is correct
SOC - State of Charge (%) - working. Same as Hondalink but updated instantaneously and shows one decimal point xx.x.
CUR - HV Battery Current (Amps) - working. same as HVC with updated name

MXS - HV Battery Cell Max State of Charge (%)
MNS - HV Battery Cell Min State of Charge (%)
Both are working. behind the scenes state of charge. Ranges from 96% to 20%. For correlation to Hondalink SOC see other Scangauge post. When I
arrived home today the spread between max and min was 1.8%. After a couple of hours of level 1 charging the spread was 0.7%. Will take an OCV
reading in the morning.

MXT - HV Battery Cell Max Temperature (°F)
MNT - HV Battery Cell Min Temperature (°F)
HBT - HV Battery Temperature (°F)
The largest spread that I saw between max and min was 4°F. HBT was between the two but closer to the min. After a couple hours of charging the spread
has dropped to 2°F. Need to study more.

A/F - Air To Fuel Ratio - haven't started to evaluate yet
FLV - Fuel Level (%) - need to evaluate more.
ATF - Transmission Fluid Temperature - need to evaluate more.

There is still some noise in some of these readings and once we get that worked out I will post the input data.
 
Btw, here are the two graphs from the beginning of this post but with HBT corrected. Previously it had the wrong offset which skewed the readings. It basically shows that in the absence of the sun everything coalesces to ambient with the traction battery the slowest to respond to temperature changes.

I will be repeating this observations today as it is only supposed to reach a high of 5F.
 
Good news, we have had trouble with some of the X-Gauge temperature readings reporting garbage values when the temp is under 32F. Looks like we got Hybrid Battery Temp (HBT) fixed. Today I saw a temp reading of 26F which is the lowest I have recorded. The PID information is below for other Scangaugers to try. Not sure if you would need the updated firmware:

Are there separate battery and charger temps due to valving?
I know there is also powertrain coolant temp (DC/DC converter?) and Transmission oil temp.
 
The AutoEnginuity scan tool with Honda enhanced powertrain option gives some additional OBDII information.

I found a parameter that seems to give the status of the powertrain. It comes out as a text string:
20 |EV Mode|
30 |Engine Stop|
40 |Engine Operating Mode E-CVT Mode|
50 |Over Drive Mode|
60 |E-CVT Mode To O/D Clutch Mode|
70 |---|

It looks like 50 |Over Drive Mode| is ‘gear mode’. Modes 30 and 60 are transition modes.

I converted these to numbers, and plotted with RPM and speed.

The graph is one of my normal trips ~55 miles of hilly interstate. I let the Clarity wind up the engine for a while around 5:44, I wanted to see if it would get back to gear mode, but I finally gave up. I clicked HV twice, and it locked into gear mode for the rest of the interstate.

The 'B' chart includes more information: Load variation during gear mode and Motor duty were two interesting ones for me...

I guess I am hooked on figuring out gear mode...

FYI - there is a cheap OBD-II bluetooth unit that can log EV state of charge data through the 'Torque Pro' app.

The only downside is that it only does whole number percentages of the SoC - I would like to be able to see the numbers fluctuate more definitively (with decimal values) according to the driving situations.

It would be great if, like MrFixIt mentioned, I could figure out how to enable PIDs for the other data you are getting to work with the Scangauge II. Many thanks for all the updates and work on this. I am watching your progress with interest.

Hopefully you see this, what PID are you using to get the state of charge? I have the OBD reader and torque Pro, but can't seem to find what display I need to add

I did no PID editing, it comes up automatically on the list of available sensor readings - on the list it says "Hybrid battery pack remaining life".

On the list of sensors that can be added as gauges it is called "Hybrid Battery Charge (%)"

I would be surprised if you don't have access to it. It does agree with the same % that is reported by the HondaLink app.
