Read Battery Capacity Yourself (Autel AP200 Breakthrough)

If you haven't read your HV Battery Capacity for a while, now is a good time to get a new reading and share it with the group !!
When you have your reading, here is a Link to the Shared Spreadsheet.

I also want to introduce a new analysis feature that is now available: On the introduction page of the Shared Spreadsheet, you will find the list of analyses on the right just as before. There is a new entry on this list (highlighted in RED). This is a very nice statistical visualization which @Thomas Clauser has provided. We now have enough data to show a nice trend which illustrates the expected battery performance very well. There are 2 pages in this new analysis (choose the 1st or 2nd page at the bottom). On the second page, you can show views of all the measured data for one or more users (use the ''Name, DriverCar#" on the top right of Page 2 to filter just the users of interest). You can 'clear' this selection to choose all users, but then the graphs become too cluttered to interpret well.

Please feel free to provide any thoughts / feedback on this new analysis.
@Thomas Clauser is an excellent resource and did a great job getting this new visualization going.

Thanks to everyone for their help with characterizing the Clarity HV Battery performance.
We already have an incredible data set, and it will only get even better over time. Your participation is greatly appreciated by all !!
 
Interesting… after 5-6 months of almost daily full discharge on highway, there is almost no battery degradation… the difference is that outside of the winter we set the charger to 12A and we don’t use the heater.

You live in Canada and you don't use the heater?!?! Is protecting your battery more important than your physical comfort?

In the past I owned a 1966 VW Beetle and a 1978 Renault Le Car, neither of which could supply enough heat to defrost the windshield, much, much less pretend to keep me warm. Fortunately, Eddie Bauer's thick, down jackets enabled me to drive in cold weather. Forty years later, I'm glad my Honda Clarity can keep me warm.
 
My reading of Ohliuw's statement is that the heater is not used and charging is limited to 12A when it is NOT winter. By strict construction of the language, no statement is offered concerning what is done during winter. One could fairly assume, given what IS said, that the heater is employed, and charging is effected at greater or lesser than 12A.

Can't say I've had the same luck, not yet having endured a Winter-with-Clarity:
Aug 14,2022: 100,559 miles
Batt Cap = 49.9 ah
Oct 30, 2022: 107,205 miles
Batt Cap = 45.62 ah

No problem, I wasn’t clear enough.

but yeah, in winter even though we preheat while in the charger, it eats a lot of battery (I’d say 40-50%).

on the other hand, we don’t use the AC much in summer, so I guess that also helps to maintain battery health

It interesting that your reading went up (slightly), and then has been pretty much flat for the long interval. I would encourage you to keep taking readings (maybe a little more often). I feel like more points can better represent whatever trends may exist. I take a reading approximately once a month, but that is maybe a little overkill. Maybe every couple months is a reasonable compromise...

I have been kind of hoping that these capacity curves might flatten out over time. I don't feel like we have observed flattening in general. Yours 'appears to be flattening, but I think the data is a little too sparse to draw any conclusions yet.
 
I routinely get around 30-32 miles of range on the battery now vs about 40-42 when my car was new. If the capacity drops to 36.6 before 100K miles I'll be eligible for a replacment under warranty. I'm not sure why mine is doing worse than the typical Clarity. As I became more knowledgeable about Claritys, I realized that the unit I bought was manufactured in Feb 2018. I bought it in Nov 2018. In the meantime, it was sitting on a dealer lot outdoors in Phoenix and I doubt that the dealer maintained it. In addition, it's routinely operating in a hot climate and most days I use 100% of the capacity. I estimate that it has around 1000 full charge/discharge cycles on it by now, so some degradation is to be expected, but this is more than I would hope for.

The beginning point of the graph is the nominal new capacity at 55 Ah. (I don't know what mine was when new as the dealer didn't provide me with that information and I didn't know enough to ask for it). The end point of the graph (at 100,000 miles) is what the warranty covers. Based on the four data points I have between 43K and 62K miles, I'll probably be just a bit above than the minimum when the warranty expires. [/ATTACH] Capture.webp

Thanks for joining us in gathering HV Battery capacity data.

I am not sure it is quite fair to extrapolate with a straight line like this, but hopefully all of the user data will give us a better idea of how this curve plays out. It is certainly hot in your area, and perhaps that could account for some additional degradation.
Please continue to supply data periodically. There will be a lot more Clarities reaching higher mileage as time goes on which will better refine our average curves.
 
Agreed - the mileage vs capacity curve will probably flatten instead of being the straight lines shown in my simplistic chart. However, the loss of about 25% of my range is real. I can no longer make trips on the battery to places that used to be within easy range.

Yes, I've been providing data and will continue to do so. If you look, you'll see that my data points are the outliers (at the bottom on the main graph) in the 40 to 60K mile region.

My 2018 just had its 5th birthday the last week of December 2022 and also just hit 20,000 miles thanks to covid. I just checked and entered my battery capacity at 51.36. Not too bad for a 5 year old battery.
 
So, was that update to the Autel software ever actually released, or do we still have to contact them to get a newer version? It just says 2.01 in my app.

The Beta version was never released, and likely will not be... As such, you must contact Autel to gain access to the Beta version.
Or, alternatively, get an ELM adapter and then Autel is not required at all.
 
My MaxiAP200 app some how got partial "updated" to a later version so that the Honda 2.01.54 beta. I noticed when I got a message that I had a mismatched version numbers and was handed off to the Play Store. Alas, my 2.01.54 was lost after that and the version I got (Honda 2.01?) did not work well with our Clarity. I sent an email about this to Autel tech support and, later, got a reply email asking me to place a phone call to a tech support number. I called and te person I spoke with did not know much but did take my name and identifying information to send to the "engineers" for a return phone call. I never got a return phone call or email but a few days later, my android phone had the beta 2.10.54 version back again when I looked at the Mall information. Alls well that ends well I guess.

Hey @MrFixit, What do you make out of this? I took your advice and gave up on the AP200 and went the $30 route with associated app. Last time checked my battery capacity with the AP200 was over a year ago and the measurment was 52.40 Ah. Today, I measured with the ELM327 system and the reports total battery capacity as 53.18 Ah. Obviously at least one of these readings is incorrect. What do you think?
