OEM tires

Does anyone have experience with both the oem 17” Goodyear Eagles and Hankooks? Look for opinions on ride quality, etc between the two. We have two SEs and one of them came with the Goodyears. The other (mine) came with Pirellis(not a fan) and I switched over to the Goodyears after liking them on the first car. Since then I’ve had nothing but issues(tire pull, vibration) that hasn’t been sorted. Also seems like all the available stock for the Goodyears has manufactured dates as far back as 2021. Trying to decide whether to order two new Goodyears or just give up and get the Hankooks…

What was it about the Pirellis that disliked?

I would say that mine are wearing reasonably well (for a summer only tire, anyway), and they provided good grip when new. Downsides would be a bit of tire hum on really smooth roads at moderate speeds, and the fact that traction seems to have declined even though there's about 5 mm of tread to the wear marks still (at 22k miles). Unless something pops up to really change my mind, next spring I will likely just replace them with more P7s.

They felt spongy and seemed to exaggerate the smaller bumps in the road. They just didn’t ride all that well to me considering how soft the sidewalls were. I would get in our other SE with the Goodyears and immediately feel the smoothness. Obviously I got a bad tire or two when I bought the Goodyears for mine.

I didn't know anything about Hankook tires--or summer performance tires--when I received my Iconic SE with its 17-inch Power Spoke wheels, but I soon considered the Ventus Prime 3 tires that came on those rims to be perfect. I especially like how the Hankooks don't squeal when cornering hard in town. That silence is the perfect complement to the SE's silent acceleration.

Unfortunately, the thought of curbing the Energetic Yellow stripe around the circumference of my Power Spoke wheels caused me much angst. I put the Power Spokes in the basement and I mount them once a year to show off my MINI Electric at Drive Electric Week events.

I enjoyed the Hankook Ventus Prime 3 tires too much to try anything else. However, for a softer ride on the nasty roads near home, I bought 16-inchers and put them on some used MINI Loop Spoke rims.

The way I drive doesn't promote long tread life, so next spring I'll be buying a new set of Hankook Ventus Prime 3 tires. There are certainly stickier tires available, and tires that offer more tread life, but I've no reason to try any others.

Are you sure the 17s came with Ventus Prime 3s? I thought the 16s had those and the 17s came with the Ventus S1 Evo 3…
