New Generation Kona EV

Newly released as in the Hyundai website just listed them and opened the waitlist on Friday. I didn't see it mentioned there at all.

*The site you link to is U.S. specs. I guess there are differences. I notice they offer Yellow paint and the tires are 19" vs 17" in Canada.

* Seems a bit odd given that the Kia not only includes it but features it.

I dropped into a dealer to confirm my waitlist position. They have cars arriving imminently which kind of caught me off guard. I thought it would be weeks if not months considering they only opened the list on Friday. And there's no V2L or power liftgate. Kind of a drag given that comparable Kia's have them.

Hi, surely this just means you need to buy the V2L adaptor separately. The electrics and smarts are still there.

Yes, there would need to be hardware and S/W in the car already.
It will be very sad if you guys dont get access to V2L for some reason. All Ive read says its available but the adaptor might cost extra.

If that is the case, I will have no interest. If they changed that (ICCU) and related V2L software for the Canadian market just to save a few bucks- who knows what else- Blue coolant instead of pink would be a third reason. The power liftgate omission is just plain old inexcusable seeing as the cheaper Kona ICE have it.
BTW I cancelled my I5 which is due to arrive shortly, and transferred the $1k deposit toward 2024 Kona EV in anticipation of those well-advertised features.
The I5 price was just too high (mid-$70s after they added ~5k dealer add ons - useless undercoating and ceramic coating plus a bunch of mats etc. Upsetting. This may become the third cancellation this year after Id-4 (same m/up bulls**t and unsure if available items - heat pump, premium audio)

Hyundai Canada never seems to produce or provide information to correct the record in a timely manner either. I mean the first cars for Canada were literally on the ground before the website showed specs and opened the waitlist. The power tailgate and V2L were just "a given" as far as I was concerned. I'm not sure they're a dealbreaker for me but certainly a disappointing omission that lowers the value and competitiveness relative to direct comps.

So the Niro gets power liftgate, but no SVM, and the reverse for Kona EV (SVM but no power liftgate)
V2L is only available in the E-GMP platforms (both manufactures) - Canada only (at least to this point)
Even my salesperson couldn't believe it, but he did acknowledge this isn't the first time advertised trim options have changed from original.
VW (ID4) is the same - not including ordered features at the last minute. It seems like they promise the world and then don't deliver.

BTW I took pictures of both (relocated heat pumps , coolant, 12V battery and HV Pack battery labels for both. I will post within a few days.

Huh, I thought that the new Kona "designed as an EV first" actually was built on the EGMP platform this time. I'd just assumed that the redesign would have brought it into the common design family of Hyundai/Kia EVs. I knew it was 400 vs 800 but just considered that a step down for budget and segment differentiation. Silly me.

I was superhyped about the Volvo 30 but found the "bargain" price spiralled quickly once I added safety equipment and a couple bells and whistles (most of which are standard on the Kona) and for a car that is really, really close to a Kona equivalent.

Also have power lift gate in both, but with the Solterra still have to push a button to open. At least with the Ioniq 6 it will open when you walk up to it, if it is locked. Had it on both Leafs and it was a godsend particularly at some charging locations with curbs in stupid locations

FYI- I saw a Canadian Kona EV overview video yesterday that appeared to show the tailgate open with the push of the key fob (by passive hydraulics) but that had to be manually closed. So it seems to be "half-better" at least.

Probably just unlocks it and allows it spring up. But could be fine with just that.

My salesman is trying to work a deal for me on my "cancelled" Ionic 5, I told him I had no requirement for their overpriced add-ons with the exception of mud guards and a few mats. Pending, hopefully something works out.

If they were smart they would let you have it without the extras. They must know that EV sales are slowing, and there will soon be an over supply of I5s and others.

I had that forced on my when I bought the Solterra. They had me over a barrel, because I needed another car badly at that time (wife driving me nuts). But I did get them remove the undercoating, and just got the ceramic finishing and interior protection. The ceramic protection paid off, as this summer got a long scratch on the side when I got too close to some brush and branches with my off-roading. They not only fixed the scratch, but gave me a new full ceramic recoat. All at no charge of course, as that was in the guarantee.

With the Ioniq 6, I "chose" to get a graphene finish, which turned out to be better than the ceramic finish on the Solterra.

What had caught my attention yesterday after watching the first video is that the pack voltage of around 450 VDC while charging at around 96% (disp) doesn't jive with the 2023+ Kia Niro (64.8 kWh) pack specifications which has a 96S-1P layout. The Kona is about 75 V higher, a significant difference.

96 cells in series x 4.16 V (fully charged) = 399 V, far below 450. Resistance losses due to the 40 A would not account for more than a few volts.

Something is amiss. Either the 2024+ Kona has a different cell configuration than the Niro or there is DC power conversion happening to limit the maximum current from the charger. I've looked but can't find the spec for the new Kona's battery layout.

I'm trying to locate a photo of the Kona's battery pack label.

They did, great deal. A shade over $33K with my trade c/w extended warranty, now just waiting delivery.
I think they just wanted me off the lot, getting tired of customers asking "what's he looking at" my feet sticking out from under the various EVs

There must be some explanation why the Kona has a higher maximum charge rate.

I thought I was ahead of the game . What is LV1...Well I'm in Victoria and will do a test drive on the 2024 this week. I drove the Ice Kona last week . I love the new door handle for some reason. I have been on the wait list since early this year . They have my color and car coming in Early January. Two tone red and black.. I have had no trouble with my 2019 and got the new battery to boot.

I figure I will be all in at $21,000 for the 2024
