NACS to CCS1 adapter - Major Failure 1st time trying

I received my Free adapter several months back. I never charge while on the road as I have a 240v charge in my garage for the occasional charging I require. We took a long trip to our in-laws cabin over last weekend. They have a TESLA & a high speed charger for it there. I thought great - I can use this new adapter and top off the car for the return trip.

So I assemble the adapter in their cable, plug it into my Kona, the light goes GREEN ... I thought, WOW, that was a breeze, Left car, and about 2 minutes later got the following Bluelink alert :

Your request for Start Charge cannot be processed at this time. Please try again later. Followed by ...

Your vehicle is not charging. Please try again. Ensure the vehicle ignition is OFF and gear shift is in PARK.

I went back to see what the charge port looked like - it was blinking RED ... So I unplugged & reinserted .. Same issue. I could never get this to Charge with this adapter. So I just plugged in my A/C adapter & it immediately started charging.

Any ideas ???? Has anyone been able to use this adapter ? Is there some setting I may be missing? TIA

Yeah, the NACS adapter that was initially sent to me by Hyundai was defective. I had nearly the same issues you did. I tried it at several different chargers and was never able to get a successful charge started.

I took it back to my Hyundai dealer. After initially refusing to look at it since it was sent directly from Hyundai, instead of being provided with the car when I bought it, they called Hyundai and eventually agreed to look at it. The next hurdle was that Hyundai insisted that they test it first before agreeing to replace it, but the dealer had no way of doing that. I'm not sure how they eventually got it tested, but they agreed it didn't work and ordered a replacement. About a week later it came in and that one has worked fine ever since.
 
Thanks. Maybe I'll try contacting Hyundai USA first and see if they'll send a replacement. I'm pretty sure that the dealer service dept. will charge me for any time to Dx it.

@Tim94549 , I'm a bit confused. The NACS->CCS1 adapter (the title of this thread) is for dc fast charging (DCFC) from compatible
Tesla Superchargers. It is NOT 240vac, which is what normally comes out of a Tesla HPWC (High Power Wall Charger), also using a Tesla plug; however, to utilize this plug requires a Tesla->J1772 adapter. J1772 is the other half of the CCS1 charging inlet on the Kona Electric. The good news is that the price of the Tesla->J1772 adapters has dropped dramatically. I carry one in my Kona as many hotels (and some friends I visit) have Tesla HPWCs.

When you plugged in your ac adapter (i.e., portable EVSE), I presume you simply plugged it into the cabin's 240vac or 120vac receptacle? It's output connector is J1772 and provides ac (alternating current) to the car.
 
@JoeS -- THANK YOU !!! That makes so much more sense. And Yes - that's precisely what I did ... Plugged into the Garage 240vac HPWC. I'll check out that J1772 Adapter for future trips.
 
You're right, there are so many now available.
I've used the Lectron and A2Z Tesla->J1772 adapters in my 2020 Ultimate, and TeslaTap in my i-MiEV, but they were some of the first to do this. Both the Lectron and A2Z I regard as high quality, with good latches at both ends, but with fairly high prices to match.
Our Kona draws 32A maximum at 240vac, so ratings of "80A" are perhaps overkill but provide a comfortable safety margin for our application. Looking at the reviews on Amazon of many of the much cheaper units, I wouldn't have qualms buying a well-rated less-expensive unit; however, the conservative approach would be to also look for UL compliance.
I don't know what the story is nowadays, but some of the early Tesla HPWCs could be programmed to NOT be compatible with J1772 adapters, and companies such as Tesla Tap had additional circuitry to ensure they worked. Can't help but wonder if some of the negative reviews on Amazon were because the user tried the adapter (unsuccessfully) on an older Tesla charging station. Worth an update on this topic by someone in the know.
