Mini SE range Display

I have had my 2022 SE for about two months now and put 1200 miles on it to date. It has been talked about here before, but i wanted to get some feed back now that the 2022's have been out for a while.

Most of my day trips are short, 30-40 miles max. Normally the charge indicator will come up to 102 - 107 with the 110 V charger overnight. Pretty predictable. However I took a couple of longer trips over last weekend 80 miles, and 90 miles respectively. After charging, the range indicator showed 117 - 120 miles after these longer usages. Now, back to my regular routine, I am seeing 105 - 107 after charging.

It is not really a big deal or a real issue for my usage, but I would like some insight as to the accuracy of this measurement if anyone has a theory.
 
The theory is that the GOM is intentionally pessimistic. Accurate would certainly be better, but if you are not sure what algorithm to use, then pessimism is preferred. I this it is challenging to find a formula that works equally well for both long and short trips.

My understanding is the GOM bases range on the last trip only, so your short trips probably don't use enough battery to get a good performance curve like the longer ones did.
 
Not (yet?) an owner, but having been reading this and other forums closely, it seems that:

1) the Mini's GOM clearly tends to be pessimistic (better to underpromise and overdeliver, apparently), and

2) perhaps a better way of estimating your actual available range is to rely on the bars on the right side of the driver's display (where each bar is equivalent to 1/8th, or 12.5%, of the SE's 28.9 kWh of capacity) along with knowledge of your current/recent efficiency.

For example, if you're seeing ~4 mi/kWh and you just dropped down to two bars, then you have about 2 x 0.125 x 28.9 x 4 = 28 mi left.

Stated another way/simplifying, each bar is equivalent to 3.6 kWh, so at:

3.0 mi/kWh = 11 miles*
3.5 mi/kWh = 13 miles
4.0 mi/kWh = 14 miles
4.5 mi/kWh = 16 miles
5.0 mi/kWh = 18 miles
5.5 mi/kWh = 20 miles**

Totally agree. I work in km not miles, but the same thing applies. I use 30km/segment of normal day to day driving (60% urban, 40% freeway). On the freeway, I would do 25km per segment to start with, and work it out on the fly. Basically reset your trip meter when you finish charging (100% for a road trip). After 1/2 hour look at the distance traveled and divide by the battery used (all available on the display). So if you have done 50km and your battery is now at 75% (from 100), you can do 50/(1-0.75) = 50/0.25 = 200km. So your range left (till empty) is 150km. Ok, so I like maths, but it isn't that hard. You can wait till you get to the easy values:

Starting from 100%,
at 80%, multiply your distance on the trip meter by 5
at 75%, multiply your distance on the trip meter by 4
at 66%, multiply your distance on the trip meter by 3
at 50%, multiply your distance on the trip meter by 2
etc.

That is your total range, so subtract the distance traveled to get the remaining range. The multiplier for the distance done so far to the range remaining becomes:
80% -> 4 times
75% -> 3 times
66% -> 2 times
50% -> 1 times (ie you have the same range as you have already gone ;) )

If you are in familiar territory, then the 30km/segment is the best way to do it (or whatever you get per segment).
 
I would like to say that the Mini GOM is pessimistic, but it's really just bad (and pessimistic). Something in the algorithm is messed up because it's not even consistent.
Many of my trips started with an estimated mileage figure, then 20 miles later that figure remained unchanged.

Most EV drivers just look at the battery percentage.

For my driving 1% =
1 mile (minimum)
1.25 miles (average)
1.5 miles (best, but easily achieved with lower speed limits and some self control)

Did Mini put an "Easy Toggle" somewhere on the dashboard?
