Mileage range at full charge

I took the delivery today and luckily remembered to take these snaps that shows mid 114 miles, green 130 miles and green+ 139 miles range.
Wow — those numbers are higher than I was expecting! Interesting…

Thanks, e22mini, and congrats on the new ride!

That’s exactly what I did. I wasn’t complaining about what the GOM forecast, I’m disappointed that after 78 miles driving like a very conservative nun I had 4% battery remaining.

I have no intention of driving the car for economy, but I do want it to be able to do a trip of 78 miles from time to time without having to stop and charge or bore myself to death on the road. I ride sports motorbikes and drive like a sportbike riding motorcyclist which was one of the attractions of the Mini as it allowed me to dart into gaps, go into bends at speed without worrying about ending up in a hedge, but it absolutely should be capable of doing it according to pretty much everyone on this and other forums, mine just doesn’t seem to at the moment. I’ll keep at it and will try another trip. I do love the car, it was just a disappointing first “long” trip. Hopefully there will be better days in the car ahead.

What was the wind like? The only times I was truly shocked by EV consumption was due to headwinds. They are a battery killer.

It was really blustery with regular gusts of wind. Trees visible from the motorway weren’t bent over due to the wind but I could feel the gusts trying to move the car around. No weather warnings or anything like that. I will try again on a calmer, drier day, but like I said, I wanted to try it in advance of making the trip to a real match as you can’t pick a nice day for a sporting event. There is an upcoming six nations tournament beginning in February with a home match against England. If it is windy and wet I suspect the i3 will be used for the trip as it has proven to have plenty of capacity to do the journey and to allow preconditioning of the cabin after the match to allow us to thaw out a little after sitting in the cold for a few hours.

So in over a year of ownership, the highest GOM range I have seen *was* 177km. After a recent trip up the coast (220km round trip), it mysteriously went to 190km. The next charge went to 155km (around town), even though the calculated range is well north of 250km. Basically the GOM is useless. The irony is that I may have been able to get maybe 225-230 till the battery was empty on the highway trip, and around town I will still have 10-15% left when passing 230km. The GOM couldn't have got it more wrong - well it could but that would just be silly ;)

Interestingly, my car is with the dealer tonight and they plugged it into their computer this afternoon and charged the car. I just checked the app and it shows I have 100% charge and a forecast GOM range of 134 miles. It’s never been as high as that even when I picked it up on day 1. My driving over the past couple of days has been local, 5 to 10 miles so I’ve driven the car without any concern about efficiency and I’ve enjoyed the local roads. I calculated I was getting around 2.8 miles/kWh. There is no way the GOM should show 134 miles. After I charged it last weekend the predicted range at 100% SOC was 88 miles. I fully expect the car will give me a real world range of around 80-85 miles when I actually get it back, it won’t have improved anything, I just thought it worth mentioning the weird jump in expected range. Has anyone else seen this after the car has been to the dealer for an update?FEF69D75-3AE6-4ADF-A5B5-3B917565404D.webp

Yes exactly the same. Car went in for SOS update. On way to dealer a "check front camera field of view" warning came up. (very bright low angle sun at the time). Warning lasted about 10 miles then vanished. Spoke with dealer who booked it in for a check. The 2 hour SOS update now became an all day job. During this time the mini app kept giving updates about state of charge, and vehicle status. It was plugged in at the workshop bay. At 80% it stopped. 20 minutes later another 1% went in. During this time the bonnet was unlocked ,doors and windows opened. Almost tempted to press a button or two. Returning several hours later, car had been moved to another bay for upgrade and back on charge. Eventually car declared ready. App showed 100% soc AND 155 mile range. Wow what did they do?
Verdict on camera? Low sun angle supposedly along with a dirty screen.
Drive back in falling light with lights on and 3°c returned 34 miles, 73% soc and 82 remaining - 4.19 m/kWh. Suggesting a 126 mile range.
Fully expect over the next day or two that the range will revert to the 109 miles that it has been showing recently. Make of that what you will.
Could not get a definitive answer on the SOS update but believed to be a safety issue regarding emergency services attending a crash scene.
Oh and have you checked your account to see if all your services have the correct end date? Ours has an incorrect mini edrive showing up. Seems there might be a glitch during the reg process.

I present you 5 screen shots. Four of the shots are from the MINI.app and the final one is from inside Mike Wazowski.
The time stamps for the MINI.app shots are
  1. 7:21 pm (charging set to start at 7:02) Showing 66% SoC good for 105 km expect 100% at 9:36
  2. 8:00 pm Showing SoC of 80% range 129 km Expect 100% at 9:36 pm
  3. 8:59 pm Showing SoC of 94% range 153 km Expect 100% at 9:35 pm
  4. 9:24 pm Showing 100% charged range 171 km Fully Charged
  5. The Dashboard Shot was taken at at 8:57 pm, 98%, range 164 (to get to 167 km) Complete charge 9:30 AM tomorrow.
I do have a departure time set for 9:30 AM and I know from a test this morning, the departure climatization started at 9:12 am. It was -9.5°C. The climatization continued until 9:45.

Here is where it gets even more interesting. (Sorry no image) at 10:03 pm, the dashboard is showing a green circle, 100% and 172 km range!

On my current charge, I have done 154 of my originally indicated 155km - the only trick is I still have 32% battery left :) From what I can see on here, as soon as you get ludicrous temperatures, the range sinks like a lead balloon. The coldest it ever gets here is maybe 10C in the middle of a winters night. The MINI app claims 46km left. If you work the numbers, 154/0.68 = 226 (always in sports mode, having fun). This should leave 226-154 = 72km. That is an impressive 56% out. I think that is a record so far.

Here, in Ottawa (Canada not Kansas), 10°C would be a nice mid spring or mid fall day. We have an extreme cold warning in effect right now. Minus 17°C right now with an expected low tonight of minus 26°C. Wind chill makes it feel like -35°
-17°C = 2°F
-26°C = -14°F
-35°C = -31°F

So would those be ludicrous temperatures?

Seems normal to me! As I've posted before, my range dropped to about 80-90 miles in weather like that, but I suspect a lot of it has to do with the heater since the heat pump is useless at that point. And also the batteries get cold-soaked and can't warm up to efficient operating temperature.

Cars don't feel windchill (evaporative cooling), so that shouldn't make things worse.

I also had a high this morning of 119 mi on a full charge. I always drive in sport mode, though, haha.

Dang! How the heck did you do that??

Actually, come to think of it, for most of the drive, save for the last 10mi I was also in sport mode…. Interesting… all city driving around town though.

That would be an interesting test, comparing the efficiency between the 2 modes.

Haha, obviously, I'm driving like a grandma. I need to step it up!

Is everyone reporting these GOM numbers in Mid Mode to provide consistency?
I’d been in mid mode before getting that range forecast from the app. When I pick the car up from the dealer I’ll try to remember to take a photo of the GOM to see what it says.
