JCW E

Man I really hope a JCW SE is built and makes it to the US.
How much would you pay ($55K? thanks to increased manufacturing costs and the 25% Chinese import tariff)? How much would it weigh (a Model 3 performance weighs 4,250 lbs)? A bigger motor or 2 motors will draw more current, how little range would you deem acceptable (114 miles?).

I honestly don’t see another small electric with a fun factor to rival that of our SE coming along until after new battery technologies are available at reasonable cost. No, I don’t think the next step in that direction should be more power or all wheel drive, but rather it should be a lighter weight car with a droptop. Fun isn’t always about raw power. I have no intention of removing the rear seat and racing for pinks.

You nailed it!

The switch in this new era for Mini sees the Oxford plant lose the electric hatchbacks that it currently builds, but Wurst confirmed that electric cars would ultimately return to the factory.

“There are major investments taking place and going to take place,” she said, hinting that a mid-life facelift for the models in around 2027 will provide an opportunity for the switch to take place.
So the electric 3-door will be made in China until 2027 when Oxford retools for full electric.

So we could possibly end up with an overpriced SE in ‘24 and a less expensive SE in ‘27? Is that what I’m hearing?

It seems like BMW is the only major automaker without plans for a battery investment within the USMCA. But because batteries are such a hot commodity, I wouldn’t be surprised if many manufacturers sourced from new third-party suppliers in the Battery Valley in Quebec and Battery Country in OH/WV/KY.

Build a car SE as Wv Volkswagenwerk as Peoples car without any extra unnecessary equipment just base EV and see how many people will buy but they put every think there new technology and a car is $40000 strip that EV to base requirements to be street worth and sell for $ 20000 and flood a market with basic transportation as all EVs basically are luxury cars for a money not reachable for average peoples as I don’t care driving EV for 7 years for free and gas $10 / gallon don’t scare me but I live here in USA loving my country whatever is going all craziness for now !

BMW already locked up contracts with CATL, LGES, and Samsung SDI so I guess they will just source from the USMCA regions? I suppose they could expand Plant Spartanburg (X3-X7) or Plant San Luis Potosí (2 and 3 Series). Plus they will just sell more to Quebec for the $12,000 rebates anyways.

At this rate to keep MSRP down I guess you could just over PHEV over BEV.

Actually an excellent question. Prior to the tariff thing, I sure had a dream.

$45k to start, ~250hp, >150 mile range, >100kW DC charging, <3200lb. Full dream would include something like GKN's E Twinster or an in-house dual motor fwd setup, something that can vector torque or act as a virtual LSD. Mini hasn't given us a real LSD since '08 or so (?) save for the GP3 so probably too much to ask, even in a dream. I think there's opportunity in the market for dual motor on single axle tech across performance applications. Yeah, you need two of everything, but it all carries half the current so maybe the business case works? The GKN deal seems overly complicated and mechanically based but I'd take that over open diff.

That's $12k over the current SE which I think is almost within reason to ask the above, including the decade of advances in motor, electronics, and battery tech over the current car for the performance / range / weight. $10k is the spread from the current base ICE car to JCW as well.

But the tariff thing...

I don’t consider the SE to be base, though, notwithstanding, the fact that the 1.5 L, three cylinder turbo engine and drivetrain in the base ICE is more complicated than our electric set up.
