InsideEVs Podcast episodes

My preference for a graph is interpolation of tables tends to narrow the focus on a single point whereas a cross country trip can span the table data range. But a retired engineer, I can handle a table even though a graph is faster and can identify interesting knee in the curve.

I’ve already graphed bot our EVs so my personal needs are met. But I’m not so curious about other EVs to graph them. Not a problem as I’m not shopping for a replacement. Just sharing my thoughts.

Domenick, Thank You for asking about the MachE STD range battery. Prefer AWD between 45k-50k. The MachE AWD STD Range w/ Tech PKG option and availability is one of the better deals imo.
Cross shopping MachE and ID4. ID4 availability is getting better [lots of VW Cali dealers] are receiving pre-order inventory.
There is only one review of the MachE STD range charging curve. It must be pretty bad.

After listening to today’s YouTube, the first third almost convinced me the panel endorses any EV other than a Tesla sold by Elon Musk. Sleep on it and listen again to the first third.

Worse there was no understanding of the carbon fiber wrapped motor and nearly flat power output at higher rpms … going to 200 mph on a single geared step down.

I have low expectations for most automotive reviewers but sad to say, this discussion was disappointing. Trying to sprinkle a little sugar towards the end did not wipe out the bad taste of backhanded comments.

I’m left with the suspicion the panel would like to see more non-Tesla sales. Perhaps the Kona advocates might chime in on how much they liked this review?

The irony is I liked the absence of ‘talking heads’ during the InsideEV streaming. The post analysis proves that one ‘Oh sh*t’ panel wipes out the previous ‘Atta boys.’

I know one of the podcasters owns a Tesla and could be two of them.
I believe you have your black helicopter license so your free to fly[emoji16]

I see the plaid as just a rich person's plaything. For average people the things are absurd. The specs, the price - everything. Maybe some of the tech works its way down to something for normal people, and if it does, I will start to pay closer attention.

The two I'm most interested in are the flat power curve and wrapped rotor. The flat power curve can give the lower grade Teslas the ability to run with fewer batteries. But the expensive, wrapped rotor has the potential to reduce the weight of all models by a lot. Less weight and more power means higher efficiency.

Perhaps, but both figuratively and literally, the "elephant in the room" is the battery. I know that people are trying various new designs (solid state comes to mind), but it takes a long time to get from the lab to something that is cheap enough and robust enough to replace lithium-ion. Press releases from a university somewhere barely get my needle to move.

If you reduce the demand on the battery from improved aerodynamics and motor efficiency, battery improvements are nice but not required.

I’ve seen one YouTube claiming the new battery is also improved but I will await EPA data.

Sorry that episode disappointed you. I think the criticism was more about the event, rather than the car. From what we can tell, the car is incredible, aside from reservations about the yoke, at least. We were hoping for more in-depth info and possibly news of another vehicle. Can't speak for the others but I thought Elon's presentation was just...not good. I know he's not a polished public speaker and that's fine. I can totally relate.
Things just seemed not-well organized overall.
I've been reading pretty great first impressions about the car this past week. We talk a little bit about it at the end of today's podcast, which I'll post below.

A retired engineer, what he said caught my attention. IMHO, he was interacting with the crowd more than the camera.

If anything, Fisker, Nikola, and Lordstown have shown a glib speaker does not trump physics and fact based engineering.

I wouldn't compare Musk with people from those other companies, only with his own past presentations.
