Fresh off its big decision to cancel the production of nearly-ready new EVs for the US market, Honda is planning to spend $28 billion on upcoming gas and hybrid models within the next three years.

The company has revealed has revealed two prototypes based on a new, lighter-weight platform (one is actually a CAR!): the Honda Hybrid Sedan Prototype and the Acura Hybrid SUV Prototype. They boast the new platform will offer the world's most efficient powertrain and costs are expected to drop by more than 30 percent. They didn't suggest prices will drop by more than 30 percent, however.

It will be interesting to examine the data on the powertrain efficiency of Honda's new platform. I loved getting up to 85 mpg/tankful on my gen-1 Honda Insights. What gas mileage will 27 years of hybrid technology advances provide? I'm looking forward to learning the drag coefficient of Honda's wedgy sedan prototype.
