Once upon a time in the 1980s, the TVA had a remote control for the hot water heater that they could turn ON or OFF as the grid needed. At one time, I had the inert box but no rate savings. Today, all they have is a two-level, rate table so looking at November:

• $17.23 - grid connection charge
• $39.36 - 484 kWh @ 0.08133/kWh
  • Energy Charge (Over 1,400 kWh) $0.08638/kWh.
• $10.50 - 484 kWh @ 0.02169/kWh, extra TVA surcharge
• $02.68 - utility tax
  • $69.77 - total electric bill
• $62.57(-) - 513.4 kWh @ 0.08133+0.02169 / kWh solar roof savings, ~$02.68 tax avoidance

My solar is undersized so there is virtually no electrons going back to the grid, 17.7 kWh ~= $1.82 if sold back at retail. But they only pay $0.05/kWh so that would have been $0.88 they got for free.
