Free charger installation check?

Before I get a quote for a charger install, is it possible to get someone to check if it’s possible at my property? I’m pretty sure it is but I’d like to know before going any further.
 
Any reputable electrical contractor will take into account load calculations and advise accordingly.
The quote should be done without charge or obligation. If your quote involves an electrical service upgrade, the cost can be reduced by using an EVEMS designed to control electric vehicle supply equipment through various means such as connecting, disconnecting, and adjusting electric power to the loads.

Check the circuit breaker panel for the mains at the top. If 100 A, a more detailed survey is needed. Larger, 200 A, no problem.
  • 40 A maximum EV charging rate - so you want to have head-room for worst case loads including one EV on a proper 50 A circuit. Sized for 50 A but typical maximum load is 80% or 40 A.

I’m not sure where you are but I have a 100 A fuse, this is the highest normally fitted in UK homes. 30 A and 60 A are not uncommon, and I read a while ago that 80 A has become standard in many new builds.

Edit: Just out of interest I filled in an online questionnaire, not definitive of course without a proper survey.

Ok, your 100 A house limit is probably acceptable but there are things that can be done to resolve EV load:
  • Set home charger maximum current - either by jumper switches or software, limit maximum charge rate to something between 6-40 A.
  • Set home charger schedule - have it charge the car(s) between bed time and dawn or when rates are lowest.
  • Set charge current limit in EV - my EVs are set to 30 and 32 A maximum. The Tesla has a schedule function so it only charges during peak solar. The BMW is handled by when the J1772 is plugged in.
