EV vs HV miles

Is there a way in the Clarity to see the miles driven EV vs HV? I had a 2017 Prius that would show this from the trip computer. Toyota definitely has a better infotainment and driver information system than Honda and it leaves a LOT to be desired.

There is no way to do it directly, but I am using a tip from this forum to set Trip A to reset at every charge and Trip B to reset at every fill up. This gives me my EV and HV miles which I am writing down in a log with range, kW, and utility costs. If you’re not keeping logs, you can more easily do this by writing down the odometer and Trip B at each gas fill up which is not all that often for most of us. Then just subtract for EV miles for that segment.

Clarity info is a gas car system with a few EV bits bolted on. Tesla’s is the opposite purely designed for EV. Prius seems designed for Hybrid. Maybe future generations Honda will go all in for us to shore this up. I can overlook this because the car operates GREAT!

It’s far from perfect, but it’s the only game in town. Now that you mention it, it really only works for me since I’m almost all EV with very seldom HV trips. And it only works if you do keep records which I incorrectly implied you wouldn’t need to. Basically, you have to keep a running total of Trip A or EV miles and note when you start and stop an HV trip. Otherwise you’re right, the sum of the Trip A EV miles will equal the single Trip B or miles since last fill up. Hmmm, so this doesn’t work without recording and summing every Trip A and then subtracting out the HV trip after charging and gassing up. So then the Trip B is just telling me how long I went between fill ups or total miles between fill ups that I subtract the HV trip miles from to get EV miles. So it didn’t work quite as well as I thought it did. But if you record all this and also kWs and gallons, you can compute costs for EV (miles per kW, cents per mile, MPGe) and HV (MPG) which I am doing. And if you want to be honest and accurate you account for any loss of SOC during the HV trip.

I think Honda went way overboard in making sure this was a “just get in and drive” type of PHEV car instead of giving us a lot of information that they thought would confuse the unwashed masses. Or maybe the software engineers were not given enough resources to fully implement all the features we wished we had.

Amen! As I've said before, I'd pay for an optional "more information update." Hundreds of dollars, even--if it provides enough information. And another C-note for the option to select which auto-reset features instead persist--such as HV Mode and regen paddles in ECON mode (those options should really be free).

I actually like that the paddles don't keep their memory, when using round about or just stopping in general I'll use them sometimes but I don't want them to go to 4 bar "breaking" right after I finish accelerating, so its great to have it "forget" and go back to 1 bar.

I meant Honda should make the regen reset an optional setting so everyone can have it work the way they prefer.

Yeah that would be nice. Why would you want them to always stay at 3/4 though?

Although a persistent 4 chevrons wouldn't provide true "one-foot driving," having it stick in that setting would make it easier to reduce the need to use the brakes in around-town driving. Because I'm always in ECON Mode, I always pull the minus paddle 3 times (which non-intuitively produces 4 chevrons when driving at sub-expressway speeds) to minimize using the brakes.

I realize you can get more regenerated power when using the brake pedal, but the Clarity's braking is so smooth (unlike my ancient Insight hybrid, designed in 1998), that I can't tell when the calipers are applied.

I'd like to be able to turn on an optional "click" in the brake pedal like the accelerator has. Before pressing through the click, you'd be using only regen braking. However, even if a "brake-click" was optional, I'd still want the option to have the regen paddle setting stick in ECON Mode (OK, also in the rarely used NORMAL Mode).

I realize you can get more regenerated power when using the brake pedal, but the Clarity's braking is so smooth (unlike my ancient 2006 Insight hybrid), that I can't tell when the calipers are applied.

I haven't really noticed a difference between using the paddles and breaks tbh, I've stopped using the paddles as much since I think thats what was over energzing and thus causing my ICE to turn on (for my whole ~7-10 mile trips).

I just think having it keep that level would cause the car to "drag" as it would be like breaking whenever you stopped accelerating... But I can see both ways. For my driving the paddles work great since they don't remember, but I only have two stop signs in my whole trip, most of it is yielding so the paddles remembering and holding me back would annoy me.

Watch your Power/Charge Gauge. It drops further when braking than after selecting 4 chevrons.

Its all dependent on the speed though, the faster you slow down the more you regen, and as the car slows so does the regen level.

But I meant for smaller breaking not heavy breaking. I swap between using the paddles but honestly try to not regen at all, since that means you were going faster than you needed to in many cases. So I do "coast" a lot, and having it remember to do 3+ chevrons all the time would drive me crazy

After 19 years of hypermiling in my Insights, I always prefer to use NO brakes or regen, but the cars behind me never seem to understand my irritating behavior is saving gas for them, too.
