I am still trying to wrap my head around how it would cost that much. Let's say $2000 tops for material costs. Where is the other 4k coming from. Hopefully other quotes make more sense.

I had a friend of mine refer a plumber to me... it was someone he knew pretty well. Quote came in pretty high and I ended up doing the work myself. Talked to the friend later and found out the plumber really didn't want to do the job.

So yeah, I agree... electrician didn't want to do the job for whatever reason.

I've brought this up quite a few times now but might as well say it again here!

If you don't tell the electrician your install is for an EVSE, it won't be to code because you'll get the wrong gauge wire. The key difference is the "continuous duty" for the EVSE means you can only use 80% of the rated circuit capacity.

You could try telling the electrician you want a nema 14-50R with 6/3 wire but it'll be pretty obvious why... and if they're stupid enough to fall for that you probably want to find a different electrician!

I think the best option is to ask for a welder install and then after you get the quote say you changed your mind and want it "future proofed" in case you get an EV and see how much the cost changes
