Electric lawnmowers?

I have that Riobi 40v mower. It is well designed and quiet. The only thing is doesn't do well is cut grass. I have to go over my lawn several times to get a decent cut. I tried different mowing heights, sharpening the blade, and walking slowly, but it still gave me a poor cut. I talked to Ryobi, and they said to buy the more aggressive blade, and sent me a free battery for my trouble. Then they asked me to remove my critical review on the Home Depot site. I told them I wasn't comfortable doing that and asked if they wanted their "free" battery back. They told me to keep it. The customer service people were nice and helpful, but in the end I still have a mower that doesn't cut grass very well. If I had it to do over, I would go with an ICE mower.

I wouldn't give up on electric mowers because of one bad experience. I have had an electric EGO 56V mower for nearly six years, have cut all variety of grasses at multiple homes in that time, never one problem -- and always a nice cut. I will never return to an ICE mower -- WAY too much trouble, maintenance, and weight for me.
 
I'm definitely going to get an electric mower when I settle in the new place. I'm leaning toward the Riobi, since not everyone has had the negative experience of e-dude, and it will be simplest to purchase (I'm moving to Hilo Hawaii, where there's Home Depot but not some of their competitors). Happily I won't have a massive lawn, so even going over it twice won't kill me if it comes to that.
 
You will regret the Ryobi--my lawn is tiny and I have to go over it two or three times to get a somewhat decent cut (I love their other tools, FWIW). Get one of the other brands at HD.

That would be an awesome replacement for a landscaping outfit, sure beats the noise and fumes and would probably reduce the overhead costs of gas purchase;)
 
Do they sell electric pressure washers yet? Just spend a frustrating hour trying to get a 2 year old gas one working. Starts up, and then immediately stops. It replaced a previously older cantankerous starting one, too. I also tried it again and doesn't work either. Dang Chinese carburettors that keep getting bunged up...

Yes they have been making electric pressure washers for years. Every thing from the high end Hotsy steam pressure washers the inexpensive Ryobi battery powered ones. My son has a plug in Ryobi from Home depot and it works fine. Just google electric pressure washer and you'll see a range of option or check your local big box store.

Yeah, I remember looking at them a few years ago, but they were all low PSI, and not cheap. Maybe better choices now.

But this thing is almost new, not ready to throw it away just yet. When I get more time, will have to pull apart the carb, and see what gives. Usually some brake cleaner fluid and blowing out a few orifices does the trick.

I have a leaf blower that also gives me similar grief pretty well every year. Yet I have this old, old Craftsman lawn mower, that starts 2nd pull year after year.

But yeah, another reason to go electric with everything you can.

It's probably so heavy it would blow out the tires on the lawn service's trailer.

Even if the lawn service gets a heftier trailer, the EV mower's weight could be a problem on some lawns--especially after rain.

I bought a Neuton CE5 electric mower over 15 years ago and still going strong. Parts are getting scarce - you can still get the batteries and blades through DR power equipment who long ago purchased Neuton. DR power equipment primarily sells gas powered equipment. Needed a battery cover which I found on Ebay. It will more than likely outlast me

Been using electric lawn mowers since the 90's. Florida grass grows pretty thick in the summertime and they do a good enough job for me. Current mower is a mid-2000's Homelite 12A plug in 3-in-1 mower. All I use is the mulching feature. The motor is still going strong. Even with body work from rust LOL. Every few years I sharpen the blade with a file. I learned how to work with the extension cord years ago. For me that is easier than wrestling the extra weight of another type of mower.

Last year we bought a 12A Ryobi electric pressure cleaner and with the extra attachment surface cleaner it did a great job cleaning the concrete patio and driveway.

You need to think carefully about IF you might be buying other E-tools in the future and be sure they are all the same brand/battery. Nothing is worse than having a Toro snowblower battery that won’t work with your mower or leaf blower. I favor Stihl products since I have one charger, two batteries and operate 4 different lawn/garden and tree trimming tools.
