I am a small-car person. My first car I purchased was a brand new 1984 Honda CRX with a 5-speed manual. The Honda was fun and nimble, but was cheaply built and not very safe in the case of an accident. I owned a 2008 Saturn Astra (re-badge of an Opel) with a 5-speed. It was fun, solidly built, very nice interior, but gutless. My most recent modern-day car is a 2017 Acura TLX with a 10-speed automatic. The Acura is very solid, quiet and fast, but has a terrible sloppy transmission that can't decide what gear to stay in. My son just purchased a Nissan Versa Note hatchback, and it is fun and nimble, but feels super cheap and the CVT transmission is boring and unpredictable.
The MINI SE is fun and nimble, very high quality, very solid and planted, and full of fun technology. It is fast (at least fast enough for me), and has the advantages of the manual transmission (regen works like a downshift), and none of the sloppy effects of an automatic transmission. I refuel the MINI using an off-grid solar energy system, so it costs me nothing. I know it is still new, but I think this is the perfect car for me.
