Consumer Reports does not recommend Tesla Model 3

I don't know about "will not survive"... there are plenty of people who will want to buy the sexy Tesla car, even if it doesn't have CR's blessing. But I think I definitely made the right choice in buying the Clarity instead :-)
 
I also read that the production issues they had have been mostly addressed. Now they are trying to hit that 5,000 car/week number.

Their data is not consistent with other reviews, which have the 3 stopping in good distances. When there are 3 or 4 reviews that show differently from CR, I am inclined to throw out CR data as the exception, maybe they overheated the system and it needs a flush.

The 3 is going to be a huge success despite some growing pains. I am waiting until it has been out a few years before I look at one.

I have the CR subscription and I read the complete report. They were able to get a stopping distance of about 130 on the first try. All other stoppage were over 150ft. They even did it after a full night rest and on 2 separate 3s and all took over 150 ft to stop CR said C&D had similar stopping results.

Sure, Car and Driver is from 70 mph and 176 ft. The extra 10 mph adds about 50%.

If CR is comparing their 60-0 stopping distance to CandD 70-0, it continues with the tradition of why I canceled my subscription to CR years ago.

Sounds like they overheated the brake system, they need to replace the rotors, pads, and fluid.

Edit, not saying the Model 3's brakes aren't undersized, but given CRs data doesn't match others I suspect something up with their testing, which they have been known for messing up. It is also possible that the test cars other magazines used are not equipped with the same brakes.

I totally agree with this. There's no way Tesla will 'not survive' because of this CR review. Like you, I too have read that braking performance was actually quite good. So I don't know why or how CR came up with these findings.

People will still line up to buy the car (as they already have), especially amidst all the very good reviews it has received. One thing I've always noticed, some are very anxious to see the demise of Tesla.

Regardless, I have to admit the Model 3 is a beautiful car (saw one on the freeway in Dallas a little while back) makes you almost want to whistle.

UPDATE - well, so much for the $35,000 Model 3

So, just a quick thought on the braking issue. It's an odd result, as it is much farther than the 119 feet that Motor Trend got and Tesla's official result.

Elon, who I imagine had engineers all over this after the article went out, said on Twitter last night that it's an ABS calibration algorithm issue which they can fix with an over-the-air update.

Personally, I'm skeptical of that claim (if he's right, that's great), but I'm happy to see it escalate so quickly and be addressed. If it turns out to be a physical issue (crappy pads, for instance), they will fix those for existing vehicles as well.
 
I could cry, what a bum rap - cannot believe CD's and now Edmonds's woes with this car. My Model 3 is quiet at speed, no wind noise, auto-drive works, and the screen has operated perfectly for 2 months since we've had the car. No service issues at all. Period. OK, there is no car that touches the Model S - this is a rocket-powered Bentley on rails - but Tesla worked for years to get everything perfect. Now, the Model 3 is more fun to drive, far better interior layout, more fuel (kwh) efficient, and totally practical and beautiful. The 500,000 people on line to buy it will not be moved, or disappointed. As to the Clarity - try to imagine how many Model 3's Tesla will sell once they start advertising like Honda and Subaru.
 
Tesla admitted they had an issue with ABS calibration and fixed with OTA update. CR retested and now recommends the Model 3based on better braking performance over previous tests.
