BMW i3 Heavy steering issue.

Hi All

I bought a BMW i3 recently. On a 2015 plate 20000 miles on the clock full BMW service history.

I really like the car. However it's got a heavy steering proplem. I've taken it to BMW for a diagnostic check. They had the car for an hour and said, we have checked everything and it must be the steering rack, at a cost of £3600 pounds.

Can anyone please advise me regarding this issue. The more I look into the issue, the more I get frustrated, it could be loads of things. I've done the basic things reset steering, etc.

Regards
Mark

Take a look at this thread I started. Does it sound like your issue?

£3,600 is a lot to spend, especially when the diagnosis seems to be based on an hour of checks. Before replacing the rack, I’d get a second opinion from an independent BMW specialist who knows the i3’s electric power steering system. They may be able to check the steering assistance faults in more detail and confirm whether the rack itself is actually failing, rather than another electrical, sensor, wiring or power supply issue. Does the steering feel heavy all the time, or does it come and go? Also, have you noticed any warning lights or fault codes? Those details might help narrow it down. If it’s unusually heavy, I’d avoid driving it until it’s been properly checked for safety.
