Associating Carplay/Iphone with driver profile

Agree - the Mini GPS (voice commands and routing) does not work well for me in SC. And while I live in SC, I do not have a strong southern accent which might confuse the GPS logic. :-)

No prob! All German cars (BMW/Audi). Come to think of it, it was perfect for me in a Kia. Tried all sorts of resets, including phone network settings.

Ultimately I prefer a more basic setup. Plus I get to see that full-screen analog clock :)

Love the clock, too. I use hardly any of the infotainment system's features. I wish the clock would be the default display without having to wait for it to appear.

That's interesting, how the implementation by the manufacturer can make such a difference.

How do you get the full-screen clock???

I could NEVER get the voice commands on my 2017 BMW to understand me, I've been quite surprised that the SE seems to "get" me.
 
So is there an answer to the original question? Worse yet, I cannot have more than one wireless CarPlay device. As soon as two are set up, both switch to a Bluetooth only mode and neither will ever connect to CarPlay again. I have to remove both, then add a single one back.

Perfect for a single driver, but as soon as two different people want to use this vehicle profiles and CarPlay fall apart.

Just curious - do you have an older iPhone in the mix? I had trouble with multiple iPhone XS and CarPlay, but after getting iPhone 12 and 13 in the family, these problems with CarPlay went away. No trouble switching between them.

Do you have your phones connected via both CarPlay and Bluetooth? They should only be connected as CarPlay devices. Bluetooth mode is for phones without CarPlay. If you have both active that may be confusing the car and explain the behavior.

Pretty sure CarPlay (wireless) is only via WiFi. That’s why when connected and you look at your Wi-Fi connection it lists your MINI. if you turn off your CarPlay on the phone or MINI it connects via BT without CarPlay

CarPlay uses Bluetooth for setup and thereafter to initiate the connection before Wifi takes over. They are paired and bonded, it's the head unit that seems confused about what that means. After tinkering more, you can switch between CarPlay or Bluetooth only, but that setting goes away the second I connect a second wireless CarPlay device.

Yes, you're correct, the CONNECTION is via BT. Everything else is WiFi. I just experimented with my wife's iPhone and key, and when I got in with both our iPhones and HER key, HER CarPlay started up. Granted, if we're ever in the car together and SHE's driving it's because I've been murdered and she's transporting my body for disposal...:eek:

Big LOL! I rarely get to drive our shared SE when we're both in the car. I owe it to her--because she doesn't cater to manual transmissions, she was never able to drive the fun car in the family before. I was happy when she came back from her first drive in the SE and said it's the most fun car she's ever driven. Also, she doesn't like the way I drive the SE. Decades ago she couldn't stand how slow I drove my 2000 Honda Insight in my eternal quest for big MPG numbers--but driving too slow is not what bothers her about my driving now.
 
Anything change over the years on this topic? Now that my wife drives the SE two or three times a week it would be nice if it switches to my iPhone when I use my key, and her iPhone when she uses hers.

I notice that you can have the connection screen pop up when starting, and enable one phone or the other.
 
If you have both phones set up and only one of you uses the SE it should connect automatically, right? As far as I know the only option is first-come-first serve with CarPlay, so whoever gets into the car first gets connected. I don't think you have to manually select an alternate phone from the list.
 
Tentatively, it seems to connect to the last phone, regardless. When the last phone is not in range it seems to default to no carplay, and you manually select the new phone from a series of menu items..... There seems to be enough range to find the phone in the house over the one in the driver's seat.

I have more work to do. but is seems setting the connection menu to always pop up and select the phone to use is better than fiddling with it as I'm leaving the driveway. An assigning the connection menu to one of the programable buttons may also help.
