Scenario: Heading south on 4 lane highway in the left hand lane. Highway generally flat with no obstacles...clear eye view as they say. Traffic volume light, ACC set to speed limit - 45 mph. ACC distance bar is set to one. Burgundy Subaru Forester at 1 o'clock off right front bumper running speed limit. Just enjoying a beautiful day looking forward to the golf outing I am heading to.

A young lady in her twenties driving a Element/Soul type of vehicle pulled out of a driveway off to my right...and into the path of both cars. The "BRAKE" light came on...alarm came on...all the while I am doing my best to put my foot through the floorboard via the brake pedal.

Squealing tires, alarms, anti-lock brakes activated. etc...looking at the driver and then the passenger...passenger saying...quick lets get out of here...driver floors it and on her merry way. That's how close I was to her vehicle. This took all of 3 seconds.

I just wonder if she will ever understand how close she came to a disaster...probably not. All I can think of? What if it was someone else who was more interested in their cell phone than paying full attention when driving a 4000 lb missile was behind the wheel? Would the "Braking" function have stopped in time? My gut says maybe because it appears to have activated full-on instantly...right about the time I hit the pedal. Still...

Point of the thread...ACC/Brake function worked like a charm albeit I was only a split half-second behind burying my foot through the floor. The Clarity and Honda safety sense functioned as designed.

Especially thankful no vehicle was immediately behind me...on the cell phone.

On the lighter side...I probably countered all the regenerative braking I do to save wear on the brakes in this one instance. Oh well. lol

The Subaru Forester pulled off the road and was still sitting there when it disappeared from sight in the rear view mirror.
 
So we have mixed reviews of the automatic braking. One person is annoyed, even put in danger, by the system braking when not needed or expected. Then there is your report.

My wife has complained about the car auto braking too.

It was due to another car turning left in front of me that caused me to install dashcams in both of our cars.
 
The CMBS has flashed/beeped at me a couple of times in town and one of them probably saved me from a fender bender. It has never braked for me though. I tried to play chicken with it to see if it would hit the brakes, but I always get too close and have to brake myself. Good to know it will a activate the brakes, but as the lawyerese states in the manual, it will mitigate the speed of the crash but may not avoid the crash. Perhaps it’s better at braking at higher speeds.

+1 on the dash cam. Mine records forward and rearward through the cabin and out the rear windows. I like that it will record any interactions I have with LEOs but now I can’t pick my nose or cuss at stupid divers because I’m always being recorded. LOL.

A friend has his dash cam save him big money on deductible and lawsuit when he got rear ended and the person accused him of backing into her. One view by the police officer was all it needed for him to write up the accident report exonerating him and resulting in no hassles with his insurance claim. I went right out and got mine!

+2 on the dash cam. I will not drive without one. If anything, I collect plenty of videos of me singing quite badly to songs playing on my radio. :)

Can you share with us the brand/model of dash cam you are using ??

I think I need two for both my cars...

Glad it all worked out and no one got hurt.

My guess is the driver of the Forester needed a clean pair of undies... LOL

It’s a Rexing v2 that I picked for several reasons. It got good reviews, has HD recording front and back (4K I think for front only), and the built in rear cam kept me from having to pull off trim to route wires to back window. Also it has a cigarette plug adapter that kept me from standing on my head to wire to the fuse box and the adapter has a USB port I use to charge my phone. Also let’s you add a GPS module if you want. And like most dash cams it senses wrecks and prevents the last video from being recorded over.

Install was super easy to run the wires completely hidden across top of windshield and down door jamb. I installed it behind the mirror so as not to obstruct vision much and have just a little of the very bottom with the rear lens below the mirror. It has minimal impact on vision and isn’t very noticeable from outside or inside the car.

Some advice: Don’t scrimp on the memory card. It gets recorded over numerous times and sits in a high heat environment. Most mfgs specify the quality of memory card you need and it’s a good recommendation.
Also, some dash cams claim to be WIFi, but almost all (like this one) don’t seem to do well with the high bandwidth that high resolution video requires. I find it better to take the cam off it’s quick mount and use its built in screen or take the memory card to my computer to view files. Sometimes I can get it to view on my phone but not to my router. YMMV.

I just bought one today. The suction cup mount seems plenty secure while I yanked it about setting options in my garage. Haven't bothered to route the wire yet; the adapter that came with mine has no USB port :( I think I'll eventually wire it into a fuse, because I like to have a USB-PD charger in the 12v socket in case I'm in desperate need of Google navigation and the phone is low on battery.

Now that I think back to a hear ago, I kind of remember that the cig plug adapter that has the USB port was extra.

They make adapters that let you have both. In the photos below if you look closely you can see USB slots.

Old thread, I know, brought to my attention linked to a fresher thread.

I wanted to point out that many drivers are uncomfortable with slamming on full brakes, and are likely not to do so in an emergency. Most drivers don’t even like to practice “foot through the floor” braking, so are even less inclined to brake that way. In addition, in accident investigations it’s not unusual for the skid marks to stop short of the point-of-impact. Which tells us it may be reflexive to let up on the brakes right when you need them most.

This is where Collision Mitigation no doubt shines. It has no such qualms built in. I hope!

Correct me if i'm wrong, but the CBMS totally ignores stationary objects ie: a car dead stopped in front of you. Dont try to play chicken with that! This is a major shortcoming to me because rear-end collisions often involve someone slamming into a car that has completely stopped unexpectedly.

@Clarity_Newbie case is interesting because the offending vehicle was moving, but perpendicular. This could have fooled the CBMS because the vehicle had zero doppler in the direction of travel. Apparently it worked which is good.[/QUOTE]

Ken, mind sharing which dashcam you bought? Would you buy it again? Any tips on installation? I'm looking for one.

Happy to. It’s the Rexing V2. I picked that one since it has good reviews, 4K (1080 p resolution if recording both), and rearview cam bout in so I would not have to remove any trim to run wires to the back window.

Here is a link to how I installed it and hid the wires. The Clarity is surprising easy to hide the wires under the headliner at the windshield an under the rubber gasket at the door. If you position it behind the mirror with the camera lens just below the mirror, it doesn’t obstruct your vision hardly at all and is not noticeable. Feel free PM me if you have any questions or want more info and I’ll give you my cell.

Thanks Ken. What size SD card did you get? I assume the recordings start over after the SD card is full.

Yes it does but it also has a g force sensor that protects the recording of any collision from being over written.
I got the largest one it would take. Have to pull it out to get the size. It is important not to scrimp and get a cheap card. Follow their recommendation to get a quality heavy duty card since it will be in a hot environment and go through multiple read/write cycles.
