23 SE Sole transportation

After multiple multiple expensive and unrelenting repairs on my 2015 Mini Countryman - I have finally got rid of the car.

While deciding on what to replace it with - tending toward a Toyota Plug in Hybrid - my SE will be my sole transportation. Most of my trips are local and within range but do have to make a 350 mile roundtrip on a monthly basis. It will be interesting to test the charging network in fairly rural western NY and PA.

Anyone make a similar trip on a regular basis?

You will stop a lot, but as long as you have a sufficiently powerful (>50 kW) charger, the car will be ready before you finish your coffee. If you can take back roads to keep the speeds down, that will help a lot.

I go up the coast here in Oz reasonably often. 220km round trip on a single charge (almost 140mi).A 50kW charger does 0-80 in around 30 - 35 mins. I find the best efficiency boost is to use the cruise control. Backroads are good (slower), so long as they aren't twisty. Constant change in speed is bad for efficiency. If you worked on a 1 to 1 1/2 hour stop cycle, the charging would be fast, and you would minimize the overall time. 5 stints of about 70 miles each. 4 recharges of 20ish minutes each. You could probably do 4 stints with 3 x 30 mins charge. Depends on where your chargers are.

On a highway, you might be able to do 3 stints with 90 -95% charge. 45-50 mins charge, but 2 hours stints. Also depends on how close you want to run the battery :) I get home from the coast with about 4%.

Edit: the reason for 80% charge isn't battery health, but charging time. To 80% is fast, 90 is quick, 95 is slower and 95-100 is very slow. It can be much quicker to stop more often and charge quicker. Unlike most cars, 90% is actually quite quick in the MINI. I get around 35kW. After 90 it slows down. The last few % can take more than the first 80.
