Hello, just an endless listing of things that may help other people. Some of these things were questions I had while looking to buy my Kona. And, yes, some of these may just be me ranting. Starting off with

Windows
  • yes, the back windows roll down all of the way
  • no, you cannot open all of the windows from your key fob
  • yes, both front windows will auto-fully-open AND auto-fully-close once triggered from the driver's door's window switch console
  • and conversely, both back widows are only momentarily opened and closed from the driver's door's window switch console

Infotainment USB Audio
  • only the USB port by the phone charger can play audio files
  • the lower USB port, under the center console is power charging only
  • audio files can be mp3, ogg, flac; those are the only formats I've tested
  • I have successfully tested up to 32GB USB sticks, I don't know the top end
 
Rant - Car Locking Volume

I don't know if it is just my car or all Kona(s) but the volume level when I lock the car from the keyfob is incredible low. If I am in an active parking lot, standing in front of the car, and lock it via the fob, I rarely hear the chirp. The caution lights blink with the chirp and I can see the car is locked.

Is you car's volume 'normal'?
 
One Pedal Driving

It is actually listed in the manual. It is also a fail. The pedal you use is the 'gas' pedal. To slow down you can release the gas pedal and your regen settings take effect. To actually stop the car you must use the paddle behind the steering wheel. So it's kind of a one pedal + one paddle.

More fails on this... when you brake with the paddle, the brake lights don't turn on. So coasting up to a stop light, then paddle to fully stop, at no point does your brake light come on. Yikes.

A win on paddles... when you come to a complete stop with the paddle (say at a stoplight), then release the paddle, you stay stopped. Nice. At this point I would randomly tap the brake pedal so people coming up behind me see I am stopped.
 
The brake light is ‘on’ (on my late 2018 build) right up until the car stops when using the left paddle hold. It’s not ideal but I just use the brake pedal to stop anyway for that reason and several others.

I was told by a long-time Kona Electric owner (but haven't verified on my 2020) that the brake lights show up when using the regen paddle when the regen is set to two or three bars, but not one or zero bars.

Also, the car auto-holds if brought to a stop using the regen paddle even if Auto Hold is not enabled.

I wonder what the logic was NOT to have the brake lights enabled when Auto Hold is enabled and one releases the foot brake?

After getting a hood with no hood scoop installed on my MINI Cooper SE, the second thing I did was connect an interior LED to the high-mounted brake light. Seeing that LED in my rearview mirror tells when my MINI has activated the brake lights.

I wanted to learn to adjust my driving style to avoid flashing the brake lights in confusing (ie. stupid-looking) patterns. It turns out the MINI activates the brake lights the instant it begins regen braking, no matter how little braking is taking place.

An easier way to learn when your EV illuminates the brake lights would be to tape some aluminum foil over the high-mounted brake light so that the red light reflects into the rear window. However, if you want to go all the way, I will be happy to mail you a couple of very tiny 12-Volt LEDs (I had to buy 50 to get the 1 I installed).
 
There was a YouTube video I watched a couple years back. In it the guy was talking about how they changed the brake lights triggering. Earlier models (into the 2018) did light the light, while later models (2022ish) do not. I'm not sure when they made the actual change though.

That is the normal behaviour on mine but I only use the 'Normal' driving mode, also known as 'Comfort' mode in some markets. A video I just watched demonstrated that in 'Sport' mode the regen levels are reduced and the brake light action changes accordingly, all of that is news to me.
I use Normal mode simply to get the proper dash speedometer. The car is no slower, only the accelerator pedal calibration is altered in Sport and Eco modes.

Auto Hold is the same as in ICE cars, holds the friction brakes after the brake pedal is released at a full stop. I believe that the brake lights stay lit for the duration, meaning until the accelerator pedal is pressed.

Left-paddle-hold is unrelated to Auto Hold and only uses the traction motor to decelerate and hold at a complete stop. The giveaway is that the car rocks slightly once stopped, a source of minor complaints back in the day. However it's totally normal within the industrial technology of motor controls and is known as 'deadband'. It's required to minimise noise (and heating) from the motor while holding a fixed position. That noise is a high-pitched tingling, coincidentally another source of irritation for those with excellent hearing.

I have noticed that if the left-paddle stop occurs on a moderate downhill slope that the friction brakes take over seamlessly. The giveaway is that there is no rocking and when continuing a slight clunk is heard as the pads release. Again there is precedent in the technology - a motor can overheat quickly when holding a fixed position under a moderate load. Industrial robots typically have brakes to hold position past a certain time interval if the axis loading can't easily be counterweighted.

There's no obvious reason why the Kona's brake light switches off the moment (actually a fraction of a second earlier) the car stops. I was going to annoy our importer about this safety technicality but it turns out that our law only requires that the lights are lit when the "service brakes" are applied. I have a tell-tail LED to indicate when my Kona's brake lights are on.

However this US owner (who coincidentally used to frequent this forum) reports a software update changed that.

For further entertainment try left-paddle hold on slopes while in reverse.
