  1. Certainly the last reference in the world I would ever rely on is the advice by vehicle model off any vendor website and Amazon is no exception. But Votex don't make it easy either because they want to match the application themselves and have consistently refused to answer my question (twice so far) about the difference between the three DP007 'variations'. And if I tell them the application they don't respond, presumably because there is neither an ICE (engine) nor automatic transmission present in the Kona EV. If I had my druthers I'd go for slightly longer thread than what we have now due to the cast aluminium housing and the risk of stripping, despite that the length we are using is identical to the stock Hyundai plug.

I know Votex have the same M18 plug listed under "automatic transmission parts" at a much higher price than the ICE engine version we are using. I suspect they are playing a game with pricing v.s. the perceived value of the application and don't want to kill the golden goose. An automatic may be accepted by consumers as a higher-value application than an engine. When you inquire about ordering a DP007-1, -2 or -3 directly from them they know what price you have seen advertised on reseller websites based on that requested dash number. But it's the same part. The packet has no dash number on it.

I'll be looking for another source because this question (what magnetic drain plug to buy for the Kona EV) is asked of me weekly in various forums and I hate to keep giving business to a company who is not fully transparent. I've got my eye on this Chinese-made part that appears to be longer and have posted a question about the length. Fortunately M18-1.5 is a very common thread for drain plugs.

  3. Does the Ioniq 5 (and EV6) have the same type of gearbox and motor configuration? And how does it work with AWD, is there a gearbox for each motor?

  4. I kind of figured that Amazon's warning was not terribly reliable. It's doubtful any "fit" database would include a gearbox for an EV when their traditional market is ICE cars with traditional oil pans and transmissions. As long as you're certain that it fits and the thread matches then I'm okay with it.

Edit* Oh, I forgot to ask: has anyone using the magnetic plug seen any captured metal bits?

  5. If the drawing is accurate, the pitch of 1.5 =16.93 threads per inch

I count 8 threads totaling .4725 inches or 12 mm long.
Looks like very good manufacturing materials although I wouldn't count on reusing that copper crush washer.

  6. Different gearboxes and motors altogether and a separate gearbox for each motor.
The motor, inverter, and transmission are integrated into a single unit.[ Hyundai claim the motor is approximately 10% more efficient than a conventional motor due to "hairpin winding technology", allowing the coils to be wound more densely, and more effective cooling.

  8. Well, I hope they learn something with each gen, and keep improving them...

  9. Adding to EE's post, the E-GMP motors are oil-cooled like that in a Model 3 and Chevy Bolt. As such there is a lot more oil, 3.5 litres, and it will have a pump. Also, the oil has changed to an ATF, Hyundai's own spec SP4-M, same viscosity and a full synthetic but I suspect less easy to find than what we use.

The question has arisen as to if the Ioniq 5/EV6 will have the same issue that we have and I've suggested to one owner that they draw a sample out via the fill opening. Because any pumped oil system must have some filtration (because pumps hate metal particles), I think the problem will not appear.

  10. I hope you are right. I have an Ioniq 5 on order. Probably won't see until well into 2023.

  11. Hi, first post, but have been reading this thread regularly.
I ordered 2 bottles of Red Line D6 and will do the oil replacement in the reduction gearbox of my 2022 Kona EV soon.
    It has 10500 KMs.

@KiwiME : I couldn't find the Red Line MT-LV 70W/75W GL-4 around here, so I'm hoping the D6 will do the job, as you suggested.

Thanks for all the input and tests in this thread, I'll post my findings when everything is done.

  13. In my case (similar change mileage) the silence of a quiet drivetrain was probably the most noticeable one :)

  14. The D6 has nearly identical specs to the MT-LV so it's all good. I think I'll add that to my FAQ since it's probably easier to find in N. America. Very few manual transmissions use the LV spec.
Thanks for participating and it will be good to have a datapoint at that kms. You should add the Votex plug as well, that's really essential for nipping this problem in the bud. And as EE says, removing particles does decrease any whining noise present.
The Votex needs a lower torque to tighten than the stock plugs. Use about 26 lb-ft.

  15. I changed the reduction gear fluid on my 2019 Kona with 20,000 miles on it. I did it as a precaution / preventative measure.
The fluid change went as planned with no issues. After I drain the fluid I ran a magnet through it and found no evidence of metallic particles. It did have a slight silver tint to it but nothing to drastic, still very translucent, probably just aluminum from the factory casting.
I did stick a small cylindrical magnet into the drain plug hole thinking maybe there was some sediment in the bottom but did not detect any. I have since taken it for a few test drives and cannot feel or hear any difference but it will give me better peace of mind on Long road trips.

  16. As a note, none of us who did that were able to pick very much and that aligns with general industry understanding that ferromagnetic wear particles lose or change that property after being hammered into dust. Based on one very early oil change it appears that particles only stay magnetically-attractive for roughly the first hour of their very busy lives.

Hello, concerning clicking motors, has anyone tried to change the bearings them self?

Sorry - I meant bearings in the motor?

  20. "No" is the long answer but someone has to be the first to do it and make a video!

How difficult can it bee? The only issue is to set the resolver right afterwards but that Hyundai can do

  22. Since I replied, YouTube is now trolling me with motor repair videos (lol!) so here is one from the Ioniq which I think is similar, but smaller.
