Well, it’s in the NEC and CEC, so technically yes — unless you hard-wire an EVSE that normally comes with a plug, like the Grizzl-E and others. That said, local codes tend not to specify it yet, and my electrician — while admitting he was aware that it was indeed in the national codes — said it was the first time he’d installed a 50A GFCI for an EVSE.
That bad boy right there (I had the cover off yesterday to install a 30 Amp breaker right below it for a new air compressor that’s arriving this week or next).
My personal opinion is it's wise to adhere to the local electrical codes, because if there happens to be a fire caused by an EV the insurance companies will for sure deny any claim if not up to code. My state is all-in on the latest NEC, so it's GFCI for every external outlet. I ended up hardwiring my Grizzl-E but also put in a NEMA 14-50 outlet for a second EVSE.
And before anybody says anything about the EVSE’s GFI tripping the breaker’s GFI, that has not happened. The Grizzl-E doesn’t leak to ground significantly enough to cause it.
Yup. It’s a solid design, and it is beneficial for all those receptacles installed before NEC 2017 began to be applied (or where electricians deem it unnecessary for whatever reason). Like I said, I purposely overbuilt my charging system, and it works. No trips.
I ran the 6/3 wire from the start when I had my garage wall open last summer. One section in the garage and one section towards the front of the house. Figured it was a good time “just in case” My electrician who’s also a family friend was saying “that’s over kill” I’m like “so is opening the wall again lol”. I just need to pop the breaker in. Also nice that my panel is in the garage. I’ll order the breaker this week.
Ugh yes. I was going to wire the receptacle’s device box, and just leave the installation of the breaker to the electrician. I struggled so much that I thought I might damage something, either the insulation on the individual wires, or the box, so I left that for him as well. In the end, he made such quick work of it that I doubt my “help“ would have reduced the invoice by much.
It appears that if I could find a NEMA 14-30 cable designed for the BMW charger, it would charge at a speed of 24A. Does anyone have a link to where I could purchase one?
For what it's worth just buy another EVSE (if you are dead set on 24A x 240V) and then you can keep one in your boot. At 24A you will need some batteries for your off-grid solar PV setup in case there is cloud coverage. You must have a 12kW+ array or something!?
Yes, I have about 15kW in batteries. The array is only 3.2kW, but I live in Florida and we get a lot of sunshine. I just want to maximize my charging capability in case I need to go on a long drive with short notice. Normally, I will just use level 1 charging using a smaller Victron Phoenix 1200 inverter because it is so efficient.
I can also report that my Wallbox Pulsar Plus and also my Tesla mobile connector have never tripped the GFCI breaker.
Here's the BMW page with that 14-30 adapter, part #61 90 5 A13 A60. They don't list the price, so if your BMW dealer can get one for you it will probably cost more than a complete non-BMW, Level 2, 24-Amp charging cable.
I just got an email from Grizzl-E, factory refurb Classics are now available for $343. It can be set (via internal dip switches) to 24A maximum.
