Turn Off VESS (Virtual Engine Sound System)

Haha, I like that locomotive sound, although would want it to shut off after about 20 kph.

Locomotive VESS is awesome!
Sadly, with the amount of people: wearing headphones/ear buds, walking outside X walk,adults biking like they're 5 years old on a road plus wearing ear buds... I am convinced VESS doesn't take the place of a vigilant driver* Pitch black out in a parking lot today,and people ignored my BRIGHT reversing lights to walk behind my EV.

Aren't you supposed to wait until pedestrian traffic is not coming before reversing? I think they have the right of way, even if you do run them over. ;)

When backing out of parking spaces, your visibility is oftentimes quite limited as the adjacent cars block your view. Even with a camera, there can be someone walking just out of the frame.

While backup up in a Costco parking lot last week I was pleased to discover that the rear cross traffic alert sounded from a man walking right behind cars where he was hidden from view. He didn't stop even though I was clearly already backing out as he approached. Must have been in a rush to get a hot roast chicken!

Rear cross traffic also worked for me detecting pedestrian in the blind spot while in reverse :

A really good feature on this car that works.
 
The other day, I backed out of a parking spot and proceeded down the parking aisle, and someone almost walked into my car. I heard him say to his friend "that car is so quiet!". That was with the VESS making it's spaceship sound. This was at night.
 
Can anybody advise me on how to take the front panel off to give access to the VESS? It has 4 screws, but after that I cannot get it out.

I didn't think he modified VESS - I thought he had something else in the cabin that could read from the CAN bus and make sound. But I could be wrong.

It would be fun to tear apart a VESS module and see the degree to which it can be reflashed. But I wouldn't spend what it would cost to buy one new, and finding one in a junkyard would be damned near impossible.

I was watching,and shoulder checking because it was pitch black.The pedestrians just wanted to walk behind my Kona.

@electriceddy there were NO beeps,your post just reminded me of this for that night,every time pedestrians come behind my kona.

But I am concerned leaving it partially unplugged. It carries CAN bus signals and I could imagine it bumping against one of the contacts and causing issues with CAN communication in the rest of the car. Have you wrapped it with electrical tape yet?

I just unplugged mine and left it as be. It's in a sheltered area without any vents, so I'm goo with it simply being unplugged.
I love the silence; the lack of whining of the vehicle. Now if only I could do something this effective you my Littles in the back seat
