Turn Off VESS (Virtual Engine Sound System)

Like I said, Teslas have been quiet for a long time and there is no notable number of incidents where the lack of noise caused accidents with pedestrians..

Ditto for any hybrid car that runs on pure electric at parking-lot speeds. I drove Priuses for 18 years and never felt there was a problem. And it's true that most people ignore the Kona's spaceship sound. But it's there as a result of lobbying by blind people, who will be on the alert for such sounds to help them move about safely.

The Honda Clarity plug in hybrid emits a noise louder than the Kona IMHO
Things are going this way

Found this on another forum:

Possible to disable thru OBD2 port w/dongle and app using these file codes?
Someone out there will probably nail it soon.
Hopefully it will be an easy app, with a proven dongle and EASY to use (like Leafspy).
My VESS connector's glued,or VERY locked.I even asked a garage to try to unclip, nope. I HATE the VESS . I look at people, and they still stand in front of me as I drive towards them in a parking lot. Cyclists, they still do NOT look. It's almost like reverse psychology, totally silent,no engine noise, they move.

I also have a hard time trying to disconnect the connector on the box, even though others have: I contribute that to my hands and fingers having limited flexibility.
Software seems so much easier.

The VESS has been investigated now and it's triggered by streaming CAN commands from the ECU. The VESS reads the car's speed and lowers the volume appropriately at 30 km/h. The VESS box does indicate its presence on the CAN as well but apparently the ECU doesn't care if it's missing. Also, the technology appears to generate the sound rather than play back a sound file, so changing it is not going to happen.

It would be cool if you would have several sounds to choose from.. I would want a loud "lopey idle" dragster sound to throw people off :D

@electriceddy ,see if your local garage may have someone who can help once you point out the connector.

Okay, third time's the charm;) A garage had someone who is more adept, with a stronger thumb, and finger than I was able to DISCONNECT my VESS ! They couldn't begin to appreciate why I was so happy as I drove off,in silence[maybe some tire noise]. Until the law makers make the VESS law...

I have done like another Kona owner, placed the two pieces connected, not all the way. When I get a chance, will wrap with electric tape to avoid contamination of the connection point.

Like others,no dash code popped up,the Kona drove like normal.

In the beginning, I found it cool but it started becoming annoying quickly.. I disconnected mine after about a week of ownership.

Welcome to the dark side!!!

When you get a creepy feeling while driving in an enclosed space from something like the VESS. When it's late at night/really early in the a.m.,you may not hear things you should for your safety as the VESS becomes louder as it bounces off walls, ceilings, and the floor. It needs to shut off.
